Usually best, for a first watch, to have an all black dial as it will go with anything. A Sub-C or GMTII-C is a perfect all rounder, comfortable in any situation. AMEN to that! I rushed on my first one and got the Milgauss GV. Beautiful watch, but I like something rugged, thus I went for the DSSD. The second time around was the charm.....TAKE YOUR TIME.

Of those, I would go for a GMT. The sub is such a Rolex classic that I would consider that as well.
