Hi Folks,
I have a DSSD and a Navitimer 01 and I'm keeping them, but I'm going to get another watch and went from considering a IWC Yachtmaster (white face), Daytona SS (White face) right up to Yacht-master II rose gold, then to a Sub 116613LN, Daytona 116523, Breitling Bentley and I am now back to looking at a silver faced Breitling Montbrilliant Datora. I even looked at an Omega Seamaster as I used to have one before I gave it to one of my sons. I have 3 months (working 7 days a weeks) to make up my mind before I can get to an AD. If I am honest Rolex sounds so good, but Breitling looks pretty amazing, IWC is perhaps too obscure for someone like me (brand driven!) and it has a plastic strap. Subs probably too small (but I do like teh balck and gold, but not the bubble over the date) and Daytona looks a bit dull next to a Navitimer (personal view). Y-M II is the ultimate look and brand, but expensive and no discounts offered in the Netherlands where I have to buy.
Just a ramble from me and feel free to give me your 2 Cents (Dollars or in my case Euros).

All I can say is, multiple trips to the AD are in order. Or a big bank account?

One other thing, IWC is far from an "obscure" brand IMO.

Don't rush it - too many nice watches out there,
I'd go with Rolex or IWC myself.

I agree for the well read, but for Joe Public perhaps not so. I do like the IWC Y-M, but the plastic strap!

Look at bit angular to me in the 2012 Wristwatch Annual and expensive.

If the YMII is what you really want, then get that - 'settling' rarely works when watch buying. Better to wait than get something you'll end up flipping (at a loss)

Or as Bert says, just get a Sub C and be done with it


But... do take a look at the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms as well...

I think agree! It is the cost that grips me or the fact that I don't seem to be able to get any discount other than the tax-off.

The Fifty Ftahoms is pretty luminous in the Annual and textile strap.

Yes, the Blancpain strap is nice and works better imho than the metal bracelet. The bracelet is beautifully made, but looks a bit imbalanced against the watch head. It also adds a lot to the price!

I'm surprised that you can't get a discount on the YMII. It's not exactly a volume seller and usually anything with precious metal in it is more 'discountable' than its steel counterpart. Perhaps try to push them harder to make a deal?

I think it must depend if they have it in stock rather than to order. I have seen them on here, but they are in the US and I must buy in The Netherlands for tax-free reasons so I am limited to the Rolex AD's.

I think I kind of get where you are going. I see the Sub C as a definite misfit amongst some of the other watches you are mentioning. It sounds to me like you want a large diameter watch with a lot going on. I am a Navitimer owner as well. For me, one Breitling is enough. While the Datora is an awesome watch, I cannot justify getting on before some of the others you mentioned you were interested in. It sounds like you have an impressive budget; go with the Yachtmaster II. It's got the brand name you want, the size you want, a lot going on with the dial, beautiful in rose gold.

Breitlings are overplayed and, IMHO, somewhat cheesy. I've had a few and loved them. However, to me, it seems like they are the "go to" for every kid out there that wants a nice watch, but doesn't really know what a nice watch is.

Oh I don't know Seth. I'm thinking of picking up an old B1 SQ and some of the vintage Breitlings are so cool! I do agree on the latest bling models though.

I stand corrected.

Even as I wrote that, I was thinking to myself that I really appreciate some of the older models. Similar to other great brands, before they sold out to the masses.

Think I'm going to wait and get a Y-M II Rose Gold, but as me and the wife have done 30 years in 2014 I might try and push it out to then. That will be a problem if I keep coming on this forum (temptation site!). I did price a Lady-Datejust 179384 for her and got a straight 20% discount offered, but nothing on Y-M II.

YMII is a very sharp piece, and I really do love the two tone combination. At first you think it'll look too busy with the rose gold, steel, blue, red, white thing going on; but it all comes together very nicely. I will say, I think you should probably hold old for a discount, or try to pick one up from a trusted seller here (saw one on here last night actually). Main reason I say that is, you seem to be just really getting out into the WIS world and are unsure of what you want which means you will more than likely, no matter which watch you get, want to make a flip at some point: so don't set yourself up to be hurt to bad.

Also, just strictly based off of the watches you've mentioned, have you looked at a WG Submariner in Blue? It has similar coloring to the YMII, but the all white gold really is a nice touch. Anyways, from new it would be considerably more than the YmII but on TRF they go for within a grand or two of each other usually. Regardless, buy what you like and enjoy.

I do like the black and gold version of the Sub and will probably take a look when I finish work in Sep. I did also like the ones with the diamonds that were in the face that I saw for sale on this site.
I am in the Netherlands so a purchase from the states is just too much of a faff. I can get the tax off here and so the price comes down, but no discount and only a limited number of ADs in The Netherlands and it seems they are all to order and a long wait.
