Cermet vs Ceramic

Elliott (mask1196) brought to my attention the use of Cermet by AP in the Jarno Trulli edition ROO.

Whatever you choose man, you can't lose. These are such fantastic watches.

What's fascinating are the subtle differences in Cermet and Ceramic. Both have a Vickers hardness of 1450. However Cermet is lighter than Ceramic and has better deformation and shock resistance properties than Ceramic - I'm guessing that means less susceptible to cracking vs chipping. It's most used application is the space shuttle heat shields and carbide tipped tools. Ceramic is heavier but also resists staining better than Cermet. It's also characterized by a deep black vs Cermet's metallic grey. Today, AP uses Cermet exclusively for the JT edition. Just though you'd find this interesting. Elliott is absolutely right... Both are fantastic watches!

Thanks for pointing it out Mike!! I didn't know the actual differences between the two bezels except the fact that they look different. Great info here and I really appreciate the insights. Learn something new here everyday!

On another note though, what do you think about adding a legacy to my AP fam? GP stole my heart at first but I realized I was getting too many carbon pieces so perhaps a bit diversity? Thought about one of those gorgeous RB2 Ti Ken has but finding an honest one seems a bit harder than getting a new legacy...

That's correct!

Love how the grayish color on the Cermet match the Ti parts on the Trulli.

The Legacy is one cool piece although the 48mm is a bit big for me.
I'd source the world for a minty RB2 a grail ROO imo
Or how bout a gold GP if you like the model

Cermet (ceramic + metal), an avant-garde material invented by Audemars Piguet, was only used in ROO Jarno Trulli. It is the one of the hardest material used by AP to date, even when compared to the Ceramic bezel. I have one book at home which explains more about materials used by Audemars Piguet, will try to post the image when I got home.

First-thanks for sharing Mike--always great to learn here! Elliott--hold out for an RB2 Ti if you can--don't settle. It is truly one amazing watch. Once in a blue moon one will pop up. Happy hunting!!
