I agree with you...I am still a little bit in shock that the DSSD went over $12K with this increase. Seems strange to give such a dramatic price increase to a watch that I am guessing is a fairly slow seller in non-WIS circles.

Yes I think this can lead to an increased interest in AP. But on the other hand the RO/ROO design is not for everybody in the way a Submariner/GMT is IMO. I am a big fan of the RO for the record, but when I show the design to a non-WIS they usually don't get it.

Thanks Dalip! I am quite excited to check out the 8500 in person. As far as the AP is concerned, I have been in a RO vs ROC vs Diver vortex for a couple weeks, but my heart lies with the Diver...so that is the direction I am going!

Agree. For $10K range I'd consider a Daytona, but probably not the other SS Rolex sports models. IMO Rolex sweet spot is in the $5 to $7K range, beyond that other brands' offerings get more appealing.

Personally having a hard time deciding between the silver 15300/15400 and the 42mm polar Explorer II. I guess I just got nudged toward the AP, though I suspect by the time I get to try on the 15400, AP will have bumped prices as well.

I'm leaning down the same route. I was on the way to a Sub but now I am thinking I will skip down my list and get a Royal Oak. Interesting views, I am on holiday for a few days in Spain, and wearing my RB 1 at the pool and to be honest I am missing my deep sea, only because I am worrying about damaging a valuable watch, and I guess I wasn't to bothered about my old rolex as I new it could stand up, but watches should be worn there's no point owning stuff you do not wear so I will have to deal with it. But one point about Rolex the SS sports really do hold there value in the second hand market much better than AP. if I new then what I know now I would have bought a steel Daytona every year since my first in 1996.

YUP...that $10k is a marker in mind when I consider Rolex V. makes..maybe its time to bump that up to $15k or $20k?

Don't think it will have much impact.... AP prices will go up too, keeping the relative positions about the same. Rolex does have a better track record of holding value and IMO will continue to do so, but as we all know past performance does not guarantee future results

I see AP and Rolex as very different in both style and utility . To me, the two brands more complement one another in a collection than substitute for one another. To each his own!

Doc, reading that made me cringe! I'm not a Rolex fanboy as I own and enjoy a few of the other horology houses, however, to liquidate your Rolex collection for some ROC's and ROO's would be a for me...

Now to answer Mike's question, outside of the 57th Street, Barichello, Pride of Argentina, the Jay-Z and the Bumbleebee ROO's there has not been that much of a shift on my list. In all fairnessness Rolex timepieces are still very much reasonable when discussing and comparing them ROO's where we will spend $20k - $70k easily. I still believe even with the Rolex price increase the VALUE is very much still there! I know most of us purchase timepieces to enjoy, however, have you ever looked into the secondary market on certain ROC's and ROO's retail price vs. what folks are trying to unload them for? Your heart will drop!

Point taken, but one who pays retail for any AP isn't looking hard enough, or just doesn't know. You buy right, you won't get hurt much worse than if you flip a Rolex. Check it out...

IMHO I think DSSD is a very special watch that is market to not general public. They cater for very serious professional or leisure divers who are looking for a mechanical equipment to back up their electronic gadgets when they do dive. I just learn to dive since last december. I dive with my SINN UX. That said, people who are looking DSSD are not your average people looking for finishing and the polish and such, these ppl knows what they want and they are willing to pay extra for it. Just like a Porsche GT3, it is lighter and no luxury and a lot less car than your average turbos yet Porsche charge a premium for it and they are selling like hot cakes.. I don't feel the pain from the recent price hike cos I bought mine in 2008 when it just launched and I paid a bit less than 8K usd .. Jen

If people are shopping brand, no, but if they are shopping price point, then yes. I think that when a person goes to buy a Rolex, nothing else will do.
