If you could only have TWO- which ones?
My wife layeth the smacketh down. I have learned who wears the pants in this household.
She freaked out about my burgeoning watch collection, and told me to pare it down to 2 "nice" watches. I can have watches beyond that, but they'd have to be something along the Hamilton, Seiko price range. And that was after I negotiated it up from just ONE nice watch - my wife just couldn't understand why I needed another watch beyond my beloved Sub. I actually told her " I want a nice watch to wear whenever the other one is in service!", so she said fine, you have have two. So for now I have a Sub and a preloved DJ I just picked up. But it's fun to daydream. If you could only have two "nice" watches (Rolex or otherwise), which ones would you get? The rub for me is that I have so much sentimental attachment to the Sub that watch is going NOWHERE. So basically I'd only have room to eventually trade out the DJ. |

I would actually be fine with just one watch, being it a 16610 Submariner Date. But since you said two, it'd be a 16610 and a 16710 Pepsi GMT.

I agree, I think one is perfectly okay. I personally prefer the versatility of the 116509 Daytona but if money wasn't an issue, I would also get the 218239dd with diamond dial for playing dress up

I'd call that a predicament, but the majority of men live within such constraints.
Personally, I think a Sub and a DJ is a nice combination of watches to own and if I were to be in such a position, that's what I'd go with, but thank God I am not, because I'm not getting rid of my Explorer for love nor money.

The other bad thing about this for me is that I feel constrained to 1 brand. Cause if I look at another brand (I like Omega), then it snowballs and I start looking at other similar brands - IWC, Breitling, etc.
If I just focus on the universe of 1 brand (hopefully Rolex!) then it at least kind of keeps me focused. |

I'd take a vintage GMT and a Submariner!

Your wife is correct of course, but you shouldn't stop there. You should go into her jewelry drawer(s) tonight and pull everything out. Then tell her she can keep two pieces of each kind, e.g. two pairs of earings, two bracelets, two necklaces, two rings, etc. Then go into her closet and take out all her shoes and purses. Tell her she can keep two pairs of shoes and two purses.

My chosen 2 would be similar what you have. I would definitely have a sub and the second would either be a Datejust or Day-Date.
Could you try telling your wife you have to get your watches serviced 2 at a time? |

If I was in the situation, (knock on wood) which I never hope to be in, where I had to choose to keep two I would keep my 1665 Double Red Sea-Dweller and a 16520 Daytona.

I would ask for three, rational:
2 gotta have watches, then the 3rd is on the catch and release program. She doesn't wear just two sets of jewelry, or two sets of clothes right?! The two are the timeless go to watches that you love (for various reasons, hopefully she was part of at least one - sentimental value there) maybe one is more dress the other more everyday etc. The third is to change things up and add the variety and Changes in style mood etc. Establish rules, the third that is on catch and release must be sold prior to "catching" another one. This rational works it's just a matter of the threshold. Note that the threshold is always X+1 HTH

For me, a GMT such as a Exp II or GMT II.
It sounds like you are quite content with the Sub. Maybe one is the right number.

Words can't quite describe my contentment with the Sub, haha. Best conspicuous consumption item I've bought my entire life, period. (I don't want to say best purchase since food is probably more important).

I'd get a Day-date II in gold for dress and an AP ROO in rose gold for a sporty occasion.
But then a solid gold GMT is a dream....or a sub.....or a PP ahhh it can't be done! two isnt enough :(

Decisions...
I would first decide...give up watches you own why? Need the cash, ok. But if you don't need the cash at this time, I would hold on to what I have and tell the wife (what my wife usually tells me): "it is an investment..."
I have a lot of watches too and my wife will eventually tell me the same, but if they are paid off and we can make the bills, why give them up? Yes, you can't wear them all at once, but as someone mentioned, your wife probably has a lot of ear rings and/or rings which she will not wear all at one time either. So if you do need to get rid of any and it seems the SUB will stay then I would think what occasion I would wear the second one. I am partial to the GMT Master too, but then the both are 'sports' watches. Business environment I might look at the something else. Just remember, once you get rid of one you will kick yourself later for doing so. |

I would pick the yacht-master and the sky dweller. Or the sky dweller and the white gold Daytona with the leather strap.

My wife must be the most non-observant person on the planet, or I have enough watches she can’t keep track. I have found that if I don’t tell her I have a new one and just start wearing it she never says a word, but if I say I want a new watch she says something to the affect of; “what are you going to sell” or “why do you need another watch, blah blah blah, money, something” went to lunch with her today wearing a new one and she didn’t even look at it. Good luck.
