Help validating the eBay Rolex..
Hi all! I was eyeing this air king but something seems off. I was hoping some experts on here could share their thoughts on the authenticity...plus educate me on Rolex history.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/320952147650...9#ht_512wt_922 First, the serial number is 5 digit (64658). I'm guessing it's very vintage (1935?)....yet the watch dial looks more like a 14000 than a 5500. Second, the movement shows 1520, but I read that the 1520caliber was introduced around 1963. Maybe it's just me, but the watch just looks really new for a 5500. I think it's a genuine air king, but maybe a frankenwatch? New dial...maybe replacement movement? Since I don't fully trust all the stuff I read online, maybe someone can provide more insight? Btw, seller has 100% feedback so i don't think it's a scam... Thanks again! |

He has photo shopped out the last part of the serial it's a 6 million and much newer than 1936 more like 1979-80. Everything else looks good endpieces are right for that band and band. Correct movement is 1520. Regards

There are better Air-Kings out there - I'd pass on this one.

You are correct I missed the pcl's, also after reading the add he seems to state that short serial, so I would summise its rubbed off, another reason to stay away from this watch. All the band refereces are good so the Plc's may be some custom polishing work.

Welcome to the Forum!
There appears to be another number before the "6" on the serial but I can not make it out. It is obvious this seller has not sold many watches in the past. Anyone can polish the center links (PCL) on the bracelet. No biggie there, if you do not like this, you will have to get it brushed. If you are set on this watch, ask the seller to look over the serial number again and post other pictures. |

Thanks again for the responses!
I also noticed that there may have been a number before the 6...wasn't sure if it was natural wear and the seller just doesn't know, or if there was some kind of scam involving removing digits... I'm not super set on this one....some of the members that responded already know I'm in the market for an AK, so thanks again for helping out with my questions. Btw, Im in Miami this week for business.....are there any reputable dealers in the area with decent preowned stock that anyone would recommend? |

Just check the "For Sale - Watches" section on TRF....there are quite a few reputable sellers here in south Florida.

Hi All,
I took your advice and tried on the Air King along with some Datejust. I'm glad I did because the 2mm made a difference for me. I really love the heritage and look of the AK, but I think I can find the same look in a DJ.. What would be a good price for a 2000-2004 SS DJ with oyster and domed bezel? David's advice earlier on AK pricing was so useful and actually saved me from making dumb purchases! Thanks again! |
