That same question could be asked of any luxury brand including Rolex :-)
The value of a luxury item is up to the individual. To many WIS's on TRF, the answer is no. To every non-WIS, the answer is probably yes! |

it's over priced at current retail of £11000
with discounts and what not bring it down to about £7000

Cary, I beg to differ... U pay X amount for a Daytona, which is a chrono after all (not that I'm a fan of chronos, on the total contrary, but it IS a complication in the watch) and 1.5X for an RO with nothing. Just a nice watch case.

I suppose anything that costs the manufacturer much less than the retail price is technically overpriced

IMHO, ALL watches are overpriced but then I feel this way because I can't buy everything I want.

So ultimately these are all luxury items, all are over-priced. |

Not at all. You pay for a superb piece of 'horlogerie'.

i dont think they are overpriced. I dont mind paying the price for several reasons. one, i love watches. two, i respect and appreciate the level of workmanship that goes into the nicer brands. and three, i dont mind paying for something that i will probably never see in the wild on someone else's wrist. so having something made to a high degree of fit and finish that non of my buddies have is something i put a higher value on.
the same thing can be said for any luxury item i suppose. would a nissan get me to work? sure. do i feel better driving and appreciating the workmanship of my mercedes. yes! we work hard for our money so we might as well have a few items in life that we feel good about and enjoy looking at. every time i look at my Diver it brings me pleasure even after i only got 3 hours of sleep on a work night and spilled coffee all over my pants! (yes that happened today!) |

I don't think it's overpriced and please do not compare with Rolex, it have been allready discussed here on TRF if Rolex will decorate movements as AP and PP do, then they will double the price of any Rolex. So you take a Rolex at a better price for now only because of that.

Anything over the price of bread falls under the discretionary bucket. If you are going to compare complications of a watch, you might as well add other timing devices to the mix. I would like to add my cell phone to that list as well. Nevertheless, it is fair to say that people pay a premium for design these days as to functions.
Look at a company like Apple and you can also say is a MacBook overprice or is $674 per apple share too much? What is even crazier is most people I know do not even used the chronograph of a watch. I think they just like the looks of a chronograph or like to ever so often test to see how accurate it is to attest to money well spent. Maybe it is better to compare Rolex to a Warhol painting and AP to a Picasso. Both great works of art on what started out as a blank canvas but one maybe more interesting to look at than the other so hence why there is someone out there that will pay a premium to own and stare at it.

All watches are overpriced.
Perhaps the question should not be whether they are overpriced, but whether you see a value in them? I bought my AP Jumbo last month, and its definitely expensive for a time only watch. However, I am really impressed with the workmanship, polishing, beveled edges, and of course the movement. It is a watch that shows a level of fit and finish beyond that of several good watches that can be purchased for half its price. |

That's why I AM actually looking for the right AP RO Jumbo, but one from the seventies (with "AP" at 6) or eighties, for it to at least have value on resale. As someone said on this thread, we work hard for our money, so at least I want to be smart with it, while I enjoy it.

I personally feel that alot of recent AP ROO have had mechanical issues. I am not sure if its just some bad luck or AP is not as stringent on quality control as some of us might think :)

By no means was I calling you a Timex owner. My point was that you could get a different view based on what you are willing or capable of spending. :-)

Things are worth what people pay for them. Do you see value in an AP? I do, and to be honest i think that for what you are paying you get a superb piece. As Mr H said its a true Horology piece. Compare the AP RO to the Aquanaut in terms of price. It depends on what you like and what you are willing to pay for it.
