Sad Birthday - Had to return my watch : - (

Well, Happy Birthday to me - my birthday present Ladies Bubbleback 1950 Pink Gold Rolex Oyster had to get returned : - (

I'm fine. Better that I found out now while I could get the full refund that the darn thing didn't work. If it was 2 weeks later I would not get a full refund.

I thought it was my imagination that it was gaining time, but it wasn't. And, when I reset it to the right time it "jumped" ahead an hour. I set it to 1:10 pm and when I looked at it at 2:15 pm it said 3:15pm? So, I reset it thinking maybe I didn't do it right. So, I set it to 2:15pm and looked at it at 2:30pm and it said 3:30. I called them immediately and within the hour all the refund paperwork was completed, it was packed up and brought to the post office and shipped back. They felt bad and told me they would give me a full refund. I kind of think that they never serviced it like they said they did.

Also, I noticed under close examination that it looked like a blob of paint had been put on the dial at 9pm to fix something. I also noticed one of the links looked bent. I was worried about that as well.

The good news is that they will give me a full refund.

First off, Happy Birthday Linda! I'm sorry the bubbleback didn't work out for you. I'm pretty sure another opportunity will come by. On the bright side, at least you got your money back and it's your birthday

Sorry to hear this, Linda. Sadly, unexpected problems can be a reality of buying vintage. Last summer I fell in love with a vintage Omega moonphase, only to find after purchase that it had been re-dialed, though I had been promised the dial was original. Luckily, as well, the seller gave a full refund.

If the watch can be satisfactorily repaired, would you consider buying it back again?

Agree - the longer a watch has been around, the more likely bad things have happened (or have been done) to it.

Well, now you get to chase your grail again...

I would not buy it back again. I lived with this for a few days and realized that the full rose gold watch is really very coppery and it kind of isn't pretty after a few days. It's not pink. It's copper. There's a difference. I didn't like it after a while.

It's possible that the watch was serviced, just not a quality job. Sometimes dealers only do the minimum amount of work needed to sell the watch. I would move on, once you find out the flaws like the blob of paint they can really bug you, I've experienced that before. At least you got your money back though!

I like the idea of vintage, but I think that new watches are much more reliable.

That is totally not true. Vintage watches can be just as reliable if to more than their modern counterparts if they are properly serviced and kept in good condition. My two vintage watches a tissot 14k gf bumper from the late 40s and my solid 14k lord Elgin from the early 50s run great.

How do you know if the owners took good care of it for the last 70 years?

Unless it was owned by someone you knew or you have it inspected by a repairman.

I have a Tissot Visodate. Looks like 1957. Made in 2010. Just sayin'.

I admire vintage watches and I'm sure many of you have reliable ones.

Happy birthday! Be happy that its onoy your watch not working right - it seem that with any of my recent birthdays, it's another part of me that should be replaced!
I hope you have a nice day and can enjoy your family today if they are in town.
