I don't like oysters

I tend to get crippling stomach pains and vomiting if I eat any sort of mollusk. I think it might be an allergy.

I guess there's one type of Oyster that I can palate.

I personally love oysters on the half shell. My favorities are from BC, but Texas has a ban in place on west coast oysters.

Great pics!

When I first moved to the U.S. my American grandfather who was a southwest Virginia Appalachian mountain farmer had recently butchered a hog and emphatically insisted I try some "mountain oysters". The sh!t eating grin on everyones face tipped me off that something was going on with these oysters and I declined. My grandfather ate them with relish and ever since I have been curious.

If you're ever in Oklahoma City, try Cattlemen's Cafe in the historic stockyards district. You can get fried mountain oysters there. I've had them - taste just like chicken!

I've seen prairie oysters on the menu before, but I've never tried them. I'll stick to the ones that come out of the ocean.

I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever out that way. Tastes like chicken you say. I hope the consistency is like chicken b/c if it's anything like real oysters that might put me over the edge.

It's on the list of one of those things to try before I die. Not high on the list but on the list nonetheless.

As I recall (it's been a while), the texture is more like chicken or tender beef. The color is very light. But no, as I recall, not a mushy texture like real oysters. Honestly, guys, if you can get past what you're eating they are pretty tasty! I mean, think about some of the stuff we eat regularly without batting an eye. Hen's eggs?!! Something that came out of a chicken's hiney? Is that any worse than bull testicles?

Good point Lisa.

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to eating, from eating raw "Uni" (sea urchin - best when harvested during a dive), "Balut" (duck's egg), meat of an Indian Python (now that tastes like chicken!), to wild duck, quail, deer etc., but i'm NOT eating any testicles, even if somebody bribes me with an 18k Sub to eat it. I guess for me, it's a guy thing.

Just the thought of eating prairie oysters make me shudder

I understand the guy thing, I think. A girlfriend of mine said her husband just couldn't handle getting their dog fixed. Couldn't bear the thought!

You've eated balut? Isn't that a FERMENTED duck egg?

Now I'm thinking of that show on the Travel Channel (I think it's the Travel Channel) where the guy samples foods from all around the globe? Fried bat, termite pie, etc....

Balut is not just a duck's egg. It's a fertilized duck egg that is allowed to age to the point of feathers, head and legs, etc. If you can eat that, then testicles will be no problem. No balut for me...

Mountain Oysters does NOT taste like chicken. Very strong beefy flavor, on the scale of liver but chewy. Once was enough.

Jason, for some reason I can almost picture you as Bucky the cat from the "Get Fuzzy" comic strip. Ever have monkey?
