inherited watch - date / value?
Hi all,
New to all this, just inherited a pair of watches actually, one appears to be very old and the other is much newer. The old one is s/s oyster perpetual, serial number 29338. I've seen a couple of sites that date that number to the mid-30's which seems unlikely as I know this watch was given to my grandfather in Christmas 1955. Anyway, remarkably it all still works, the bracelet is all there, the self-winding mech works, the crown is still sprung and winds the watch and it keeps great time - it's been running on my desk for days no problem. I also have what appears to be the original box and the instruction book which also has a couple of service stamps, 1958 and 1962. Any help would be appreciated on how to accurately date this watch and also some indication of the value please, thanks. |

Nice piece.
Not really valuable...(Most are not with the exception of a few rare references) but beautiful.. Most likely from 1950s btw I would say 1000-1400 USD (If running properly etc)

i agree
Not super valuable but still a very nice watch. A regular service will make this thing look great. That's a very good looking dial, too.

I agree, 1950s, picture isn't good enough to tell which model. Better pictures would help.
From what I can see $1200 maybe Sent from my using Tapatalk

very nice watch
worth spending about 300-400 to clean and get running.not worth more. the bracelet could be worth quite a bit. measure the width between the lugs - should be 19mm or 20mm. if it is the latter - the band could be worth the sae as the watch |

Hi,
It does all work absolutely fine, and the serial number dates it to 1932. Lug gap is 20mm and as far as I know this is the original bracelet. My father wore this watch for some years after his father passed away, so it does indeed have some sentimental value. Sorry for the picture quality, I'll try and get something higher quality. Thanks for the comments, very helpful. |

Serial number between the lugs is definitely 29338.
I don't want to sell it, or break it up, but I do need an accurate valuation for insurance. I'm nervous about wearing it, I have other watches that I wear daily, this one just feels too important to me to risk losing or damaging. Thanks again for the comments. |

29338 would still fall in the 1950's range, I don't think a digit has worn away. It does make more sense that it's a 50's watch tho!
The engraving on the back says "love from Jean, xmas 1955" so that would place its production bang in the middle of the re-numbered range you mentioned, according to this site at least: http://www.qualitytyme.net/pages/numbers.html Good news tho, a date and a value! Thanks all. |
