Explorer 1

Hi,

I just recently bought my first Rolex, a Submariner, and I immediately became addicted. I am now particularly interested in buying the Explorer 1, however, buying two Rolexes within 6 months would be hard to run by the wife, if you know what I mean.

Here are my questions:

• Is Rolex going to stop making the Explorer 1 anytime soon? Is the Explorer 2 a replacement, or just an addition to the Explorer line? If production is halted, how much time do I have to convince the wife before I can't buy it new anymore?
• Are there any reasons why I should wait (other than my wife), for example upcoming improvements of the Explorer 1 in the near future?
• What is the price of the Explorer 1, brand new, from a certified dealer?
• How come it is impossible to find the official price of any Rolex on a website?

Little chance that Rolex stop it anytime soon. Actual version 214270 have been presented 3 years ago only.
Explo2 isn't a replacement, it was an addition to Explorer but back in 1971.

From an AD 214270 is priced 6550$

If you want to continue to wear your Sub on a regular basis do not by the Explorer. Your Sub will get very lonely.

The Explorer is a fine piece - no rush they are making plenty of them. You can shop around the Classifieds here and find a barely used one for under $4800.

I currently have the Rolex Submariner Steel (14060, if I remember correctly). I have always wanted the one with the date, but in the store, I did not like the magnifying bubble. I almost ended up buying the Sea-Dweller instead, just because I like the flat face better, but the watch just looked too big on the wrist (still an amazing watch, though). The Sub w/o the date was the right choice for me, and I wear it whenever I can.

I find the Explorer 1 to be similar to the Sub's style that I already like, but different enough to change things up every now and then. Besides, I do need a replacement watch whenever the Sub is in for service and cleaning... BTW, do you guys have any recommendations for that? Any authorized dealer should be able to do it, right? How long does it usually take? Can they even replace parts in order to make my Sub look like new again? What service interval do you suggest? Are they usually doing it in-house, or do they send it off?

Questions over questions... yep, I'm a newbie.

1. Congrats on the Sub!
2. I would suggest going through an AD, yes.
3. I think the normal turnaround is 4-6 weeks, maybe.
4. Your Rolex will come back looking new after every service. If parts need to be replaced, Rolex will replace them at your cost. (ie not free)
5. 5-7 years is a typical mechanical watch service interval.
6. The AD will send it to a Rolex service center.

Do some reading here and you'll get all the answers you need before it's time to put it in for service. That way you can judge for yourself.

You have many options, some ADs do in-house servicing, others don't. Sending it to the Rolex Service Center is always an option. And there are certified watchmakers with Rolex Parts accounts who can also do a service.

Some subscribe to a 5-7 year interval between service work. Others say run it 'til it breaks. I usually go 10 years* as long as it is getting light wear and passes regular annual pressure test + runs close to COSC.

* I rotate multiple watches so none get more than 3 months' worth of wear per year...

re explorer one , in my view its too close to a no date sub ,,, size and style wise , maybe look at a datejust.
colour bracelet and style a lot different , just a thought , enjoy your sub.

@77T: Reduced wear is one of the reasons I would like to get the Explorer 1. I wear my Sub on a daily basis, and I would like to give it a rest every now and then. I work as a contractor in the Middle East, and all the sand and dust over here are rough on any kind of equipment. I don't mind small scratches, as long as they can be polished out, actually, I think they add some character to the Sub. It's always good to know that the good people at Rolex can make it look like new again though.

@dysondiver: I thought about getting something completely different, and I was always fascinated by the YachtMaster II. The Day-Date is nice as well, but I think you'd almost have to wear a suit with it ;)

hi , buy a casio diver for 50 dollars , beat it to death on site , swap to something nicer on the way home , after all you dont wear your hard hat in the house.

Whenever I know that there is a chance of the Sub being banged up pretty bad, I wear my trusty old Timex instead. When I first got the Sub, I was almost paranoid about minor scratches, but after a while, I figured if I buy a Rolex, I am going to wear it. After all, if I am not mistaken, the Sub was designed for divers, and most of the environments that those guys operate in are pretty harsh as well.
