G Series Sub
Am I wrong, but I thought G series would be the updated Sub no date?

What you mean by updated? The new one with thick case and ceramic bezel? That one just came out this year and has a random serial.
G-Series means from 2010. |

Okay, thanks, the seller is stating its a 2012 model. I understand now, thanks. But yes, I was referring to the thicker case, wider crown guards, and C bezel.

It does mean though that they were produced in 2010. Of course there are still some on the shelf for sale brand new, but they are 2 years old NOS.

Well, how do you explain the new release Sky Dweller with G serial? NOS as well?
Possible made in 2010 before Basel even release it in 2012? |

And in any event the date the case was stamped has little to do with when the watch was made and shipped. If I was a betting man I'd be willing to wager a friendly amount that there are still G serial cases somewhere in the Rolex warehouse and they will produce watches with them. It is certainly possible that a G serial watch in an AD was made in 2010 but that is not necessarily so. But in any case as a buyer, even of a used watch, I'm more concerned about when it was sold because that's when it really started life and tells me how old it is in meaningful terms (how well it was taken care of, years left before service is required, etc.). |

But it can hang around at an AD for years, if not popular, and then it started its life well before sales date.

But I agree it can well be that there are still cases around still to be used. I am surprised though that there are Sea Dwellers coming out with G serials, that would mean that Rolex still has gold G serial cases on stock (as there is no steel model out yet of the SD).

There really is no difference between a G serial made by Rolex in 2010-11 and a random made by Rolex in 2012, both sitting at an AD. Both will be in perfect condition with out a scratch or ding on them, both are warrantied for two years, and both will need the recommended service at the exact same point in time. If they both leave the AD at the same time the random cannot necessarily be expected to last longer than the G simply be virtue of it's serial number. |

I agree no difference, if watches with whatever serial delivered to AD at the same time. But if a watch is sitting a year or two at an AD, the service is needed earlier. It is even better for a watch to be worn than sitting around (from a mechanical point of view).

A service interval is just a recommended time period between services. In fact, you realize yourself when a watch really needs a service. I personally believe that a service is a cash cow for Rolex. I have seen vintage Rolex watches only serviced three times over a 40 year period and some that needed a service every six to seven years. You can't tell precisely. And once we talk about service, I just mean the technical necessity to service the movement, not polishing and dial or crystal replacements.

As mentioned above, the Sky Dweller was released in 2012. They have been seen with G serial numbers. This means G serial watches are produced in 2010-2012. |
