That's probably the most correct. However, we live in a time when casual is the new formal, at least in America. In California, you can't get people out of their t-shirts, shorts and flipflops, and Cali is leading the rest of the country down the road to Adidas Warm-Up Suit hell. That said, everything has gone kind of sporty. Like a tight Tom Ford suit ("Daniel Craig, call your office!") and the vogue in big watches.

To the OP: As nice as that Cartier is, I would wear a classic YG Cartier tank on a seal skin strap. Kind of a dream, I know, since seal skin is banned. The original YG Cartier Tank seems so classy to me.

I think you can do a sub but the Cartier would be better looking. It matters what you think looks better as I can promise you no one at that party will care.

Sub C on a Bond NATO band. If it's good enough for Sean Connery.....

I'd say go for the SubC as well. After all, depending on how crazy your tux is, it's just a suit with a bow tie. I don't get why everyone is so against this.

I think more women would notice what kind of car you are driving than what watch you are wearing!

If you already own a dress watch, e.g. Cartier, etc. I would say wear the dress watch with the tux. Since you don't, and your lady friend likes your Rolex, wear that one. It is kind of fun to think of the different milestones that you celebrate with your watch.

Recently I had to go to a dressy event, and wore a rather expensive black Armani silk skirt suit. My Rolex Yachtmaster, which I wear every day, with every outfit, was "in the shop" getting serviced at the RSC. I thought about going watch-less, but then remembered that we have my husband's great-grandmother's Gruen white gold +diamond Art Deco watch in a drawer. It is a classic cocktail watch on a black cord. I'm sure this will make WIS' go nuts, but I went ahead and wound it (probably for the first time in over 40 years), without regard to the unlubricated gears and movement. It seemed to keep good time, so I wore it all night. It fit just perfectly with my outfit.

The Cartier Tank is an iconic watch in its own right, and if you don't already have a dress watch, and the watch appeals to you, then it certainly fits the bill. Cartier is a master jeweler, and they know how to make beautiful things out of metal, and the quality of finishing is at least comparable to Rolex.

I'd wear the Cartier. And for those that say you should go watchless with a Tux, if it's worn above the wrist bone like it's supposed to, nobody will see it anyway!!!

Despite the Cartier SS Tank Solo XL being tank-shaped, it is a casual watch. The SubC may have been in a movie and/or an advertisement on the the wrist of a tuxedo-clad actor or model - but is not apt for a formal occasion.

A thin Gucci quartz on a lizard strap is more appropriate...

Tux is semi formal (if it was white tie this would be different) and you can by all means play with the formalites a little and wear a sports Rolex or any watch you wish or of course follow the assumed tradition of none at all.

However, IMHO the Cartier would be better suited but only if you had your heart already set on the watch regardless of the Tux/Rolex/Cartier affair.

Have a fun evening

I was at a black tie wedding last night, wore my TT DJ as mentioned above in a thread. The guy sitting behind me I noticed was wearing a sub with Pepsi bezel in his tux behind me. I thought it looked fine.

Whatever you like. Forget old fashioned and outdated notions of what one is supposed to wear.

Well here is the epilogue to the story. As I mentioned I would I wore my SS Sub C and I evaded the Formal Wear Police. Funny thing....I noticed a gentleman weaing a Seiko diiver on a black rubber strap. But most of the time I didn't see anyone's watch and they did not see mine. Thanks for all the comments, both pro and con.

Happy New Year everyone

How the hell did he get past security?

I guess the reality is in today's world who gives a darn? When you think about it, it's pretty ironic that a Sub would be considered out of place at a function where 90% of the men are in rented clothes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
