I work for US Customs, this is most certainly not a myth.

As usual Customs is blamed for enforcing US Law. If people do not like the law they should contact their congressperson.
Thanks for chiming in - true, the law is the thing - no problem with the guys enforcing it for our protection...

Rolex has no monopoly on Swiss Watches and sells in a free market. But they do have a right to control the illegal transfer of their goods between market centers as trademark owner. Long history of common law, etc. Worth some research...

I think you misunderstand the purpose of this law - it protects you from fakes, too. And protects your investment in genuine Rolex items.

ROLEX USA can impose what ever rules, no body really cares. Ultimately it boils down to what the reality is at the U.S CUSTOMS because they are the enforcer of the rules. And the reality is that the U.S Customs can not inspect every single package that comes through. IF the customs opens a package and a Rolex pops out, the officer might not be aware of the USA ROLEX restriction and let it through with a duty. BUT don't risk it. The name ROLEX rings a lot of bells everywhere in customs. So be safe and do not push your luck.

It's shocking that they are allowed to do this. When you buy something it becomes yours and yet they can tell you what to do with it.

They allow you to wear one watch coming in. So if you have a collection of 3 Rolex watches and you decide to move to America, you can't take them with you ?

Rolex do not own the mail service and they do not own the watch in question so what business they have intervening ? I'm guessing I'll get the response "it's their name on the watch" but if we start letting companies have control over goods they have already sold, well that's a slippery slope.

I'm not sure how I feel about this stolen watch business as well. I hope they release the watch immediately to the police department that reported it as stolen and let them deal with it. If they take care of it themselves then that's just not their place. I can see them siding with whoever bought it from the AD just so word gets around and they can weaken the secondary market.

I'm not sure about your stolen watch comment - this is about buying a Rolex outside US and having it shipped in or bring it in yourself.

On the point about personal property and moving to the US, the Rolex accord would require you to declare it as part of a household relocation. The law has provisions for this type of legal transfer into the US.

It's really no different than other goods that have controls on them. For example, electronics and other items can be controlled. This link will help if you plan to immigrate with your Rolexes: http://www.msbdc.org/publications/im...quirements.pdf

Offhand, why isn't this allowed under NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)?

Rolex isn't made in North America. NAFTA's goal was to eliminate barriers to trade and investment between the US, Canada and Mexico. Swiss products not a part.

Wow. Just wow. A major (non US) corporation gets to decide whether private citizens can buy a watch overseas and have it sent to them. I guess our lawmakers really have totally sold out.

Many auto manufacturers do this as well. I am not certain that it is a trademark deal, but I know that if we ever sold BMW's or Lexus that we knew we're going over seas or to Canada we were threatened with the manufacturer pulling the franchise.

I am in two minds about selling my '68 5512 (which I bought in whilst in the UK and that came from Holland) while I am here in San Diego.
Recently I was in Boston and I went to European Watch and Albert didn't seem to have a problem offering to buy it from me.
I didn't accept his low offer for it, thinking I will get closer to what it owes me on here.
It has the original rivet USA bct with it which leads me to believe it originated here so could I be asking for trouble if I sell it here?

So I cannot buy any watch from Ben (nbTimes) from Hong Kong? There must be more than a few here that have.

Sure you can. You've already brought it to the US and Rolex has no reason to presume anything wrong with your personal watch coming with you. The import restrictions permit bringing your own property into USA.

IMHO, it's best to discuss that with nbTimes rather than drag a fellow member's sales policies into this discussion, don't you think?

Don't forget that even if the watch is purchsed on a trip overseas, that the watch MUST be declared when entering the USA along with the CORRECT value. That is, if you want to continue to be a law abiding citizen.

Regarding mailing a Rolex into the US, there is one circumstance in which it is allowed. If the watch is being sent there for service, the correct customs document is filled out, and it is subsequently shipped back out of the US, its allowed in. I discussed this at length with Bob Ridley before sending my 1630 cross-border to him for an overhaul.
