Particularly keen to know about the sizing from lug to lug (I know the case is 42mm).

I have really small wrists and recently got my first Rolex Sub non-date (114060) and this is just about right at the limit of size that my wrist can carry off. This measures at 40mm case and 47mm top to bottom so not sure if the IWC would be a bit of a push. I think this chrono and leather strap would be a nice alternative to the Rolex Sub so I'm loving the look of it but not sure if it is a little too big.

The trend towards bigger and bigger watches isn't too good for me!! haha.
I think that watch will be too large for you. I have small wrists and find anything over 49mm lug-to-lug to be too tall for my wrist. I haven't measured the Ref 3717, but I found it too large. The older Ref 3706 is 39mm in diameter and fit me well and was nearly as large as I would be able to wear - I also find this model to be more "authentic" to the heritage of IWC's older pilot watches. All of IWC's 7750 based chronographs are tall watches as well, so they wear big.
