Uh-oh. Watch out, JJ! Steel might be making a visit!

Hey, Steel ... I'm the same way you are about SS sports watches. I have an SD and also a titanium SEAL watch. To me, the SD is not only the ultimate tool watch, but its dressy enough to wear with a suit ..and, as you found out at Wal-Mart, gets some attention (sometimes unwarranted) as well.

Personally, I don't think I would get two duplicate Rolex models, but I might go for another Rolex tool watch like the EXP II. With two of the same kind, one of them will sit around unused as you won't really have a reason to wear it ...at least with another tool model, you can switch them around. Of course, maybe it's the idea to have one unused in a box so that you can enjoy one for awhile and eventually have a "new" one to put some wear n' tear on ...but if that's the idea, you might want to see what new changes the SD will have and make a decision then.

I'm not the expert by any means like many here are, but it's rather unfathomable to me that Rolex would change the bezel on the SD.

my pleasure! Best of luck ... if you have $5k to spare without worry, you're in a great position to enjoy it. People spend much more than that gambling at Vegas, and I am sure you're making a financially sound decision. One can always make more money, but having money for money's sake (another number in another numbered account) is sad to me. If you have enough for financial security, you are fortunate and should enjoy it.

I know how you feel, I own a SD and I love it. I feel it is one of the finest Rolex watches money can buy. I have wanted a second SD but I thought about this and I want to buy a second SD if and when Rolex does a model change on the SD. If it were me, I would save the money spend around $580.00 on a Glock 35 and enjoy the Glock while you wait with the rest of us to see in April if anything at all will change on the SD. If you don't wait and Rolex puts out a new SD you might have three SD. I would wait it is only a few months. Enjoy

Tombstone,
you are very right. Maybe I should wait it out. Worst case, what happens? They will not alter the SD ... but there is enough buzz going around that it just might be worth waiting.

thnx,

You seem to understand this "money is just a number" feeling.
Yeah, financially I have no worries and this $$ comes from my toy account, so no impact at all .... I am 38yrs old and realistically or statistically, I have started my last half of life... so in the bell curve of life, I am now sliding down the final slope and the music ain't gonna play forever .... and I have lost a lot of people around me, some related to me me, others just friends, over the last 5 yrs and I have come to the distinct conclusion/feelig that it is just a matter of time for all of us.....
doesn't mean I sell my house and blow all my $$ out of fear I will not see tomorrow, but just have fun ... if you desire it, go get it and have fun with it ......

some food for thought ... ok, this yr, there will or already is a price increase ... in April, SD might get a stony, I mean, ceramic bezel.

So now what happens to all the SDs with regular bezels?

You don't expect the store to sell both ceramic and old style SDs for the same price, do you? People will definitely want the new style because it is new .... so shouldn't the old style which is right now the current style, get you more discounts???

Nah, get something else.

It's a bit like Steve Correll in that movie, where he had forty-two GI Joe dolls in their original packaging...

If you were to buy a second SD in order to seal in it lucite and preserve it for eternity... that MIGHT make sense to me. But, why have two of the exact same watch otherwise, other than to simply hoard them?

Two of the same, for these reasons:
1) I think SD is the most burly and toughest rolex for the $$. I like tough things.
2) There will be a price inrease so if I buy now, I just might avoid the price increase.
3) I want to spend on another rolex and the thought of knowing I could have bought the toughest but didn't, will kill me.

You all have a point ... my idea to buy is to not wear it but keep it in the closet for a while and then wear it a little and put it back in the closet, since i already have a new SD and SS SUB with date. But since it is gonna spend most time in the closet, i might as well wait for the ceramic to come out and then store it in the closet because at least I will be staring at the new model!

But again, I did not really like the ceramic and didn't really hated it but I am curious if they are gonna come out with the new model and what it would look like ... maybe it would laso have a tougher chain? May be it would be rated for 6000ft instead of 4000? It just might be worth the wait ...

Also the dealer has to has to give a disvount on the non-ceramic bezel IF the ceramic and modified SD comes out .... so I guess I am not losing anything my waiting ....

I can understand you're compulsion. Now that I have a White dial Daytona, I would like a black dial. Technically the same watch, but different. You are correct about losing friends. At my age, I spend way too much time at the funeral homes. As far as charity goes, IMO it begins at home. I do quite a bit through service clubs etc but I did'nt scrimp and save my whole life to give it away to strangers unless it's legit. Any of us that have more than one Rolex could have given that money away.

No doubt. I don't know where all the "preaching" comes from about attention-seeking or charity. In my view, giving that much to charity depends a great deal on degree of wealth. I work hard to help people in my profession, behave honorably and ethically, and donate to charity when I can. My first charity, as Steel says, is my wife and me, and then our immediate families. Many of us here may one day have to support a parent given the state of thing.

My question is why some people take the opportunity to trash another member and preach about how he should or should not spend it. Probably, some of the same people complaining about that "donate" more to their favorite sports team than to charity, but charitable giving and the like are (i) personal ;and (ii) relative.

How about these posts stay focused on ...uh, I don't know ...? WATCHES? He asked the opinion from other WIS Rolex collectors, many of whom have more than one Rolex watch. Many would argue that having more than one luxury watch of $5k or more is excessive regardless of income, and I hope we haven't reduced ourselves to judging others about that or anything else, especially without knowing the person or knowing their specific circumstances.

Hopefully, our good moderators will see these type posts and issue a gentle reminder.

Cheers.

PS - David (Watchnut), I wasn't slamming you ... I thought you made a good point. My comment is directed to some of the other posts I didn't see before, but which said that Steel was either attention-seeking or should give the money to charity. It'd be nice if we can just discuss watch stuff here rather than issue forth judgments.

I can appreciate you taking the high road here, but the guy asked for opinions on purchasing a second, identical, $5300 watch. He opened himself up to some scrutiny by doing so. I don't condone trashing the guy either, and it's why I haven't said more than I have. But he asked for opinions and seems to have a rather cavalier attitude about things in general. On the WWW, that's a prime recipe for getting flamed.

I make no apology for my comments on this post. He asked for an opinion and got one or two. Give the man his due though he took it as it ws meant without malice or prejudice.
An insight can be had if you look for the following post.

Wise words I think - well put.

For the record: I have nothing whatsoever against the original poster in this thread but I do agree with the above.

If I had the mad cash, I'd get another SD. A few on this forum collect more than one of the same watch (not to mention variations). Do a search.

I mean what is the big deal! From what I read, EVERYONE enjoys the duplicates.

Steel4me, get what you want. Get 10 current production SDs if you like! Post a lot of pictures and even the critics will praise you.

I once owned an Omega SeMP and considered buying a second becuase I thought is was the ultimate, fst foward only 4 years and man I am glad I didn't bu another Omega. a Sea Dweller is a different story I'll admit since it is a Rolex butI would suggest buying a different model.

I'm so jealous that you are having a Toy-account :D !

In my opinion, I will not buy the same watch again (unless a vintage).. i will keep the money and hunt for something that come by (i think it's should be fun to go out hunt for watches with "bullet" in your toy-account).. maybe another Rolex or other brand / model...

it's just my opinion... no offen :)

hope you got what you looking for :)

You are correct, I agree life is short. I have had several friends my age die. One was shot to death this past summer (work related/law enforcement) My bills are paid and anything I spend on Rolex is ok, I have never bought a Rolex on credit.

He might need a "back-up Sea-Dweller" in the event of a "mishap" at Wal-Mart.
