hi guys.

looking for a bit of advice.

i am planning on sending my watch in for a tidy up and potential service just to get rid of some wear and tear.

the crown on my watch however has teeth marks on it from the previous owner unlocking it.

can this be rufurbished or will it require a new one? any idea what the going rate is if so for a new one (part and fitting)?

also i am missing a link. this is not an issue because it fits me perfect. but if i decided to sell is this an issue? again idea of cost?

i am a bit of a novice but attempting to learn as much as possible. any guidance would be greatly received however.

"teeth marks" on the crown... That would concern me. I don't think that a crown replacement would add too much to the cost during a service. What did the guy do, use a pair of pliers on the crown?

Send to the RSC for a service quote. The crown assembly is usually replaced anyway, so I would not be too concerned about it. They will not proceed with any work until you accept a quote. Not sure if there are differences in RSC policy between UK and Aus, but here some items (such as the crystal) are optional. I would think about what you do and don't want done to the watch and take it from there.

Things like crowns and crown tubes are just normal serviceable items and are often replaced as part of normal service. But remember the crown should only be screwed down just finger tight there is no need to use force to screw the crown down. There is a Oring seal in the crown head and over tightening it will prematurely put extra wear on that seal.

Sorry, can't help you there. You could try contacting an independent watchmaker, although I don't know of any in the UK who I could recommend. The well-known guys on the forum are based in the US (Dalton and Rikki). Perhaps ask the mods to move this thread into the Rolex WatchTech forum, where you will get more specific advice.

excellent thanks for the advice. if i was to look to sell would this impact the price i should ask for? i assume not if its pretty much standard on service?

do you reckon not having a link is an issue?

Well a savvy buyer would factor service cost (if required, or service history unknown), extra links (if required), original box & papers (if they care about such things) into the price they are willing to pay. With Subs, age is less important than condition and completeness (service/ownership/documentation/packaging). And of course a watch with zero documentation will be a little harder to authenticate
