Long term storage

I have purchased 2 Rolexes, 1 for each child.
If you were going to store it in a safety deposit box for several years, what would you do?
Crown undone or screwed tight?
Is there a way to lay it in there better for it?
Maybe over thinking this and just put them in there, but just wanted to make sure.
The safety deposit box is not big enough for the boxes.

Face up in small pouches and as mentioned earlier, crown screwed in. Maybe visit them twice a year, wind them up and put them away again.

Would it be a good idea for the OP to put a couple silica or desiccant packets in the safety deposit box with the watches in order to keep any hummidity down? Or is this unnecessary? That's something I've wondered about generally when using a safe or whatever.

I keep mine in pouches in safety deposit box. I actually wind them once every month or so and always love crown screwed in.

that's a great question. Should they still be serviced after say 7 years to relubricate due to drying out, or just service them when they are brought out of storage and are scheduled to be worn regularly.
Hopefully more experienced will give their opinions..

Nice thought anyway.

Wish my Dad had similar thoughts !

I am about to do the same thing. I will probably wind them every six months or so. I will also put some humidity packets in my box but its more for paperwork than watch protection.

i thought that the lubricants drying out thing was a bit of a red herring and that the new synthetic lubricants are good for much longer. and if the movements are not running and the watches are hermetically sealed, then i can't see them needing servicing.

I would make sure that you give them a full wind every 2 to 3 months just to keep the oil distributed through out the movement. A humidity packet wouldn't hurt either.
I too wish that my Dad had similar thoughts...

There is no need to wind a stored watch, the oil does not drain away from the lubrication points like an engine does when not running, the oil in a watch stays where it is put.

Of course winding a stored watch won't hurt anything, if you like to go wind them every now and then go for it. And no worries if you don't.

However when it is time to start wearing have the case pressure tested ( to make sure all gaskets are intact) also have a watchmaker check amplitude and timing
If everything is in tolerance you are good to go.

Cheers.

My dad did this for our heirloom. He has 2 heirlooms an 6580 OP and 6605 DJ. He would keep the OP in our home as a watch to be used around once a month or two while the 6605 is in the bank vault. Both are in seperate watch boxes, screwed crown and checked every month or so to see if it is running and clean

Ken, if worn minimally & in rotation do you personally still abide by the quoted service times or leave it much longer
