The 116509 commanded a preowned price of £10,000 back in 06-07 when MRSP was around the £14k mark.
It has quietly and steadily crept up around £500 a year to its current £13,500-15,000 mark. The watch had found its market price and generally kept to it. Same with the 116520 SS model. Market price £5500 in 06/07 £7000 today. The problem is that Rolex has decided to increase the MRSP from £14,000 to £25,000 in the same period. The market ain't buying it. |

I believe most of the problem comes not from supply/demand but more from the fact that you need to bite the VAT and AD discount before you even get close. Let me explain: A company reselling a watch is supposed to add VAT to everything they sell which in the case of the UK is 20% so in order to sell a used watch the price needs to be not only lower than the discounted rate offered by the AD but also a further 20% lower just to cover the VAT. So a 2 year old watch would need to be less 15-20% to cover AD price discounts, then less another 5-10% to cover depreciation of a used watch and then they need to remove a further 20% for VAT which gets added back on top again. Add that all up and you're at your +50% mark and they still need to make a profit!! The additional vat obviously doesn't apply for used items so selling privately gets you the most money, but you can still expect a good 30% less which on a £20-25K watch is a lot of money, enough to buy a new from AD SS model. This is enough to put most people off, the solution is to only buy gold/plat because you like the watch and intend to wear it for many years to come! |

She's particularly hard on her SS DJ and basically goes about her day as if there is nothing on her wrist at all, much to the demise of the poor watch. It still looks ok with lots of dings and scratches but nothing you can see from more than a foot away. Her WG bezel has a few bumps but nothing that deforms the shape of any of the grooves. |

Dan, the day date will hold up well. I wear mine everyday and it gets a lot of abuse, but the gold is a lot stronger than people on the Internet will lately tell you, as I'm sure you know with your gold Daytona (love that watch too, btw).

Wore a YG watch every day for years..traveled all over the globe..no durability problems whatsoever.
It just seems that, like all "fashion", gold bracelet watches go in and out of style/trend. Can't get my wife to wear her YG anymore..wears just SS. |

Now that's one that will always be higher than mrsp Ken, surely keeping rare variants of vintage Rolexes is one option.

If some think 50% off on a solid gold watch is a good deal - pawn shops buy them for FAAAAARRR less than 50% of retail...
Again folks wearing gold watches are wearing them because they want to - not because of what they paid for it or what it may or may not be worth. The look and feel appeals to them and their lifestyle - and that works for us all. |

I have to laugh a little bit here. We're in a forum dedicated to watches that most would argue are completely impractical when you can buy a cheap seiko that keeps great time, and replace it 100 times before you get to a Rolex. We buy Rolexes because we want them, not because we can justify their practicality to anyone who isn't a WIS type person. To me, gold vs. not gold (or platinum) is just an added layer of this. Why buy a Daytona if you aren't going to use the nifty features? Why buy a GMT hand if you don't travel a lot? Why buy gold when SS will do? Because we WANT to! That's really all the justification you need. SteelerFan, your sub is a work of art. Beautiful thing. And count me in as a dope too since I really love my gold vintage Rolexes. So there !

Why do you own a Rolex at all then? By the same logic you're using, aren't you a dope for paying 100 times more than the price of other stainless steel watches? You paid £8k for a SS Daytona. That's about 3 times as much as a SS chronograph from a brand like Tag Heur. Still considered a high end watch by most non-wis people. Aren't you a dope for paying so much for your Daytona? If we follow your logic that is. Not to mention at least gold signifies that it's a high end watch. SS watches start from about 1/100th the price of a Rolex. You don't get a solid gold automatic for £220 (1/100th of a gold gmt) |
