I wouldn't do it. If its listed on eBay then buy it from there if you like it. If your making a deal on something listed there to buy it another way, I believe, that's against the rules. Like with anything, buy the seller. That's most important.

It is a risk - but if it is one of the Top Sellers who also sells independently as well as on eBay - then you may have a shot. If you'll save 10% or more then perhaps - but if it isn't that level or better, then not worth it.
By the way, does the seller have an e-commerce website outside of eBay?

How much discount% would you get from him by skipping eBay? And you might post a new thread in Who's Who, or WatchOut! to get specific feedback on the seller from TRF'ers.

Paypal is WAY WAY TOO Buyer biased ... they will not listen to reason and they screw the seller, if you run into a dishonest buyer ... and beleive me my friend, there are dishonest buyers as plenty as dishonest sellers...you sell them a Rolex and the complain to paypal they received a seiko ... and then you are done!!

I've had some difficulty with ebay "trusted sellers." I'd so much rather use a trusted seller from this forum than any ebay seller. There was one I dealt with who had almost 1000 positive transactions, but that was because he cheated and lied, for example telling ebay that I opened the back of the watch which was against his warranty (and how else do you verify the movement was Rolex? It wasn't, by the way). Then he claimed that I'd changed the movement. Then he claimed I didn't ship it back. It really got ugly and the only way I got a refund was because I had carefully documented all the lies this man told, used photographic evidence, etc. It really wasn't worth the time and effort.
The "protection" ebay offers really isn't protection at all. And PayPal wouldn't help either, which was unusual for them. My credit card company would have, but they would do that regardless of whether you use PayPal or not. I'd use a trusted seller from this forum. You might even get a better product for a better price.

If he listed the item as an auction, he's paying the ebay fee regardless of whether you buy it from the listing or him directly so I don't know what money he's saving.
How do you know its the seller? |

The final sale fee can be a couple of thousand dollars for a gold Rolex or the like. That's the difference. I'd be up for an "off Ebay" sale if we both split the fee savings. I'd not go with Paypal though, unless the online store has a Paypal checkout. |

I've done plenty of off-eBay sales so we avoid the crazy eBay fees - but don't plan on relying on any protection from eBay or PayPal. Just make sure you're comfortable doing the deal and are otherwise OK with potentially losing that money, in the worst case scenario.

Listing fees are close to nothing, and often nothing at all. It's all about the final fee (FVF) to the seller, which can only happen if the auction ends on eBay (as it's supposed to). It takes a big chunk, and sellers like to dodge it. |
