Explorer 214270 questions
I was so looking forward to buying a new 39mm 214270 Explorer but when I tried one one I was frankly disappointed , for a couple of reasons and would appreciate any comments:
1) The clasp whilst feeling more "solid" than the older type has limited adjustment possibilities. If the band is too tight or too loose removing or adding one link can be too much and it doesn't have the small adjustment possibilities that the old clasp has. If its too tight or too loose ,then you are just stuck with it. Pulling out the 1/ 2 link may not be enough and looks kinda weird. Am I missing something here? 2) The big block case just looks too big and an artificial way of making the watch look bigger on the wrist . IMHO the smaller 36mm Explorer looks more "natural" and in proportion. 3) There seems to be too many sharp edges on the case and the band looks an awkward fit at the case. Just a bit ragged. 4 ) The small hour hand is not that bad , but it does seem like a "parts bin" kind of approach . I think it deserves a bit more thought. Don tget me wrong I love the watch ..but these issues have me leaning towards the 114060 NO Date C Sub. Thoughts?? Knoffie |

The 36mm is the one to get anyway. A 14270 is what you need

I disagree with all 4 of your points.
if there is any fault to be found it is in the minute hand being a tad short because they kept the same hands as the 36mm however all around the 39MM Explorer is a beautiful watch

The bracelet does have micro adjustments. And i disagree with points 2, 3, and 4. I have this model and yeah it doesn't have the flash that other models have but that's mostly why I chose this watch. It's got all the things that I value in the brand. Maybe you should try it on again?

I disagree with the above statement, I think your closest options to explore1. Are the following:
Sub ceramic no date, or milligauss the black dial. |

Hi Knoffie,
Ehm... We are in the same boat.. I bought the Exp 1 39mm in december 2010 probably following too much my "I want a Rolex!!" mood and at that time I was in love with it..Then wearing and wearing and wearing it simply your points 1 and 2 came to reality.. I flipped it in and now I bought a 114060... I simply love this Sub!! Exp simply wasn't my watch.. It took some time but at the end I arrived to the conclusion of your point 1 and 2 ! Get the Sub 114060, now!!!

Get what looks best on your wrist and feels most comfortable. There is so much I like about the No Date Sub (great looking watch, something special about it) but the Explorer looks better on my 6.75" wrist. If you try both on at the same store the answer may be clear.

A black dial 42mm Explorer II followed me home today and I am very happy. On my wrist it seems to work well enough (matter of taste, I admit) and the size is otherwise attractive. It complements my white dial DJ II which permits nice change offs. Should the wrist size not work out perfectly, my AD I one of the best around and will surely make it right.

There's always that perfect Rolex for everyone, the Exp 1 may not be for you. No worries! Just get which one you will be happy with. Beauty and comfort is highly subjective... Different strokes for different folks!

I have the 39mm Explorer 1 and love it. Simple, understated, but elegant. A pure timepiece.
I liked the older model, too, but opted for the 39mm because the 36 seemed a tad small. For me, 39mm-40mm is ideal. But, to each his own. The 36 is a classic,as is the Sub. No wrong choices here. |
