What do you wear when watch shopping?

Even if I am just looking or want an AD to take some watches out of the case, I find it that the dealer believes I am really interested when im wearing my DJ. If I am going to a watch store I always wear my concord delirium or DJ so I am waited on faster. Then they are glad to show me any watch I feel like looking at, especially the ones I cant afford

if i am just going shopping to look around i will wear my rolex. if i am going purposely to buy i will wear my thailand only release seiko blue monster. if they know about watches they will know it wasn't sold in america so hopefully it will show i have some interest in watches but it doesn't come off that i have all the money in the world.

it probably doesn't work but it sounds like a plan!! lol

Whatever happens to be on the wrist when I walk into the store ususally works for me...most of the AD's around town have seen me before and know my hobby, so I don't think the actual watch would help in this situation.

I'm the same. I don't go out of my way to change my watch. Usually it's the Rolex or my Seamaster because they happen to be my favorites.

I am more often in the AD buying something for the missus, at the jewelry counter, than buying a watch for me. However, I usually will take time to do a little watch looking.

I have found that the AD's watch sales people usually like to chat longer, and are less concerned about the fact I am just looking, if I have on something they do not see very often, so if I put any thought into it, something like my Bathys, one of my DOXAs, or one of the limited edition F1 racing related watches would be my choice.

This is also sometimes a way to see if the person behind the watch counter knows about watches or is just a sales person standing near the watch counter.

One time a person asked "what brand watch is that?" When I replied it was a DOXA, she said she had never heard of it.

If I am going in to buy, I'll just wear whatever I am wearing. I do not think it makes much of a difference. In that cirumstance, I know what I am going to buy, and know what I'll pay.

In fact, I like the idea of wearing no watch. What a better way to let the sales person know you are serious and intend to buy!? And, you can have it sized and wear it out.

I don't wear a watch when watch shopping. If I buy something, I will want to wear it out of the store :)

I have found in recent years that, if anything, ADs either don't notice my 1675 GMT or they actually treat it a little with disdain - because it isn't 'new', representing recent wealth, they reckon it's not much of a status symbol.

The Jubilee bracelet on my GMT is getting a bit worn and 'floppy' (a bit like its owner!!) and I was in an AD last year just enquiring about the cost of a new Jubilee. The response from the young man was 'Oh, I couldn't possibly order you a Jubilee for that watch. It's not worth getting a new bracelet for THAT old thing - the bracelet would be worth more than the watch'!! No, in my experience, ADs are definitely not impressed by old Rolexes.

I just wear whatever I happen to wear, but I do notice that the salesperson always look at my wrist to see what I am wearing. Another thing is that if my wife accompanies me, I get quicker attention, as if they perceive that I am more serious in purchasing. Just a guess, though.

I don't care which watch I wear. I think all of us on this forum know enough about watches (okay, some a LOT more than others, and I'm one of the others) that just our bearing (interest, ability to discuss and knowledge of what to look for and at) makes the sales person give us more attention. In other words, if you're a member of this forum, you have enough interest in watches that it shows when you're in a jewelry store, and the salespeople automatically give you better attention. N'est-ce pas?

Like others here, I wear what happens to be on my wrist. Of course, that's usually my all black GMT-II; sometimes it's my Breitling Navitimer Olympus (that's the one that gets any attention at all since there are so few of them around). Of course, I always take off what I'm wearing to try on what's being shown to me. And since what I've got on is usually one of those two, they are treated nicely. The soft pad is put out so I can put my watch on it. The really good sales people will take a cloth and clean off my watch.

Of course I never buy (all mine have come from eBay sellers) but since the ADs are usually not busy, they don't mind talking watch talk with me.

They will show you what ever you want whenever you ask. Remember, they work their at minimum wage and cant afford their own products. Does it really matter if they are impressed. The question is if I like what I am wearing. A rollie on my arm, a smile on my face, the world is mine

I would love to see the reaction from an AD to some moron that not only owns a fake but actually wears it into an AD while watch shopping for the real thing. How humiliating would that be? That would be priceless. It would be like driving into a Rolls-Royce or Ferrari dealership with a Geo Prizm and asking about a swap or trade-in...LOL

IMO I think you would have more success with pricing if you wore the brand that you were shopping for.

My usual practice is discretion and trying to establish a good connection with the salesperson. If I'm out to try a watch I always place mine in my pocket upon entering a shop and put it on again before exiting. If a salesperson is inquisitive (in a good way) about what I normally wear then I will tell them.
