New Sea Dweller or New GMT Pepsi ?

I too work in Law Enforcement. I wear my Sea-Dwell to work in the office, and the sector with the rubber band on patrol. I wouldn't be too kind to a scumbag if my rolex got scratched when I takled them.

I own both. If it could be only one, I would choose the Pepsi, for the following reasons:

1. Lighter by 20 grams, flatter and wears a bit more comfortably;
2. Has the cyclops, which is good for my aging eyes, even though I prefer the cleaner look of the SD without the cyclops.
3. Has the colour of the Pepsi, and can be switched to red/black and all black.
4. Tells time in two zones simultaneously.

However:

Canadian MSRP is incredibly high, and with overloaded tax schedules, the price of an undiscounted watch gets out of hand. Since our dollar is on par with the US, its ridiculous that we have to pay 30% more for the same watch that our American cousins get. It pays to shop around. And you'll be wearing a seriously expensive watch to work. More on that later.

Also, switching out bezel inserts on the GMT is often regarded as an easy thing on this forum. Personally, I have not found a Canadian AD who will sell you an insert, and I understand that the American ADs are similar in their towing of the Rolex line, i.e. no selling of parts to non-ADs.

Bezel inserts can be purchased in Western Europe without problems for some reason. Buying from EBay leaves the usual concerns for authenticity.

Then you have to find an AD who will swap the bezel out, many of whom here in Canada will not do, since the insert is not destined for the watch. Doing the swap yourself can be a bit dodgy, although our experiences here can be found in previous threads. While I have the three bezel inserts, I try not to swap the inserts more than twice a year, since the watch is not designed for that.

Ultimately, I'm really happy to have both the SD and the GMT II. Both wear in different ways, and they both have great histories. You can't go wrong with either. Try them both on in unhurried, calm surroundings and think it over.

If you're a copper, do you work patrol or investigations? I'd be a tad leery I think to encourage anyone to wear a Rolex on regular patrol, although many here do. In the end, the watch is made to be worn, just understand that whether you're in law enforcement, construction or medicine, there may be perils that your work presents that you might want to consider before strapping on a $6000+ (and with taxes in Canada it will be +) timepeice.

that's what insurance is for,i just insured my sub for $6000 through state farm for only $56 dollars a year.

Hi Peter, this is just my opinion but if I were you, I would go for the SD and keep the Monster for work. The scumbag factor plays into both GMT or SD so don't let that influence you too much. At the end of the day, you need to go and try them both on and get a feel the "ONE". You don't seem like the kind of bloke who would want to flip and change once you've bought so try them both 1st.

As I said, I am a Leo and own both watches. I wear the SD 10 to 20 times more often than I wear the GMT.

If things get too hairy, you can take the SD off and whack the scumbags in the head with it. The SD is so heavy it should be able to crack a skull or two.

I wear my SD to work everyday, and I think it is comfortable. I have small wrists, but somehow the SD rides perfectly on my wrist.

If you are LEO and out on patrol, I'll echo others in recommending that you leave the Rolex at home. Wrestling a dirtbag on pavement can do serious damage to any Rolex!
