As a diver myself this is very sad news. Diving (any kind) is a fun sport/hobby, but water isn't human domain. We need to be careful.

RIP

Wow didn't even know these guys went down that far with no aid. 200+ feet! Incredible. I thought I was slick holding my breathe for 2 minutes in the pool as a kid. RIP

That is sad news indeed. Oh well, hope there's an after life where he's enjoying rum with fellow sea dwellers long gone.

X2 On that one although free diving is quite different to scuba diving they both have risks.Today there have been more men that have gone to the moon than have descended over 300m using scuba gear.

Sad loss, but when you're pushing the limits…

His colleague sums it up:

“I really enjoy going on this journey where other people can’t go,” said Michael Board, a British record-holder who went to compete in the Bahamas over the weekend. “The feeling of being deep under water, somewhere you’re not meant to be, and feeling this sort of mastery over your body and your mind, and it being so peaceful, and you’re not scared. It’s a real achievement.”

Agreed. It is always sad, but to an extent, things like this are self induced. People try them because they are not supposed to be able to do it.

Turns out the discussion/commentary on the NYT article is a pretty interesting read as well. People obviously have widely different opinions on what risks to take in life.
