Thank you all!

I'll probably wear it for a while then sell it. I don't keep them long. I'm working up to my grail watch.... a TT Sub blue on blue.

I don't know if I should tell everyone my secret. This is actually the second Rolex I've picked up in this price range. The first was a modified 1603 (diamond dial, 18k bezel, crown, and buckle. I got it for $700.

I keep an ad in Craigslist saying I buy vintage watches. I pay cash. Most won't go for a low-ball price. But, some do.

Oh, I also have a Rolex caseback opener. So, when I meet up with them, I open the watch to verify the authenticity. This is a MUST!

Your Oyster Royal is probably from the early '60s, actually. Box (and likely bracelet) appear to be later.

The serial dates it to '53. 887XXX.
I'm sure the bracelet is off a later Rolex.

If you look at this chart of SNs: http://www.qualitytyme.net/pages/numbers.html , you will see that Rolex started back again in 1953 before SNs reached 1,000,000. Your watch appears to be from 1962 by their chart (and dial/hands are consistent with that).

If you have a photo of the inner case back, most of the time the production date is marked (unless a service replacement).

You're absolutely right! Caseback has the date code "1.63". Thanks for the correction!
