I'm not saying I would not have loved to have received a Rolex for graduating from high school - but come on, it's high school. Just being there and paying attention pretty much gets you through.

But i'm not much a believer of the whole college bit........I went to college but never graduated.....I now manage one of the largest sales depts in this region....got there on hard work....and now I don't have to pay college bills..... As long as he's happy and works hard at whatever he wants to do....I'll be happy.

My wife said recently told me the same thing that Tools just posted, the result was I traded in my DJ for the Sub which my son will get when I am done with it.

I would do what most guys said....buy yourself a watch now and wear it and when it comes time he graduates have the watch serviced before you give it to him.

Alternative viewpoint.
If he already likes watches at 10 then by the time he graduates he'll be much more knowledgeable and appreciative.
Get him the classic style GMT II (16710), put it away never worn with stickers etc.
When he opens the little time capsule after graduation he'll receive a BNIB watch that hasn't been available in almost a decade and will be worth notably more than one that's been worn. You can also give him your current watch if you want after buying yourself a replacement.

I respect that. A strong work ethic is extremely important. And above all else, happiness is key. I'm hoping that my college degree ends up being of utility for me - I'm aiming for a career in law enforcement. I have yet to be employed because of a bad driving record - never give a 19 year old with a lead foot a 300 hp car! I got my last speeding ticket 2 years and 8 months ago, and am waiting for my driving record to clean up before I start reapplying. If it doesn't work out - I have a wonderful wife and a slew of opportunities out there - I just need to put myself out there to find them.

In the interim - I am a firm believer in dedication, and have stayed with the same company from age 16 (23 now). I know that if the law enforcement career does not work out, I have put in enough time to make a career out of where I am now.

Whatever decision you make regarding this graduation present - BNIB 7-8 year old watch (I loved the GMT suggestion), father worn watch, or even a brand new one - will be a wonderful gift and I cannot imagine an ounce of disappointment on his behalf in any scenario that plays out with a Rolex being the gift in question.

I`m with Larry and most of the guys on this subject.Buy yourself a nice Rolex,wear it for years to come and then,on graduation day,give it to your son.The fact that he receiving HIS FATHER`S watch makes this watch priceless!

Take the cost of the watch, put it in a stock market index fund, and by the time he graduates high school, you can probably buy him the watch and a matching car with the money.

Get a 14060M COSC and wear it until he is ready. He will find that far more special than a new-old watch.
