Would any of you owning a gold submariner ever go diving with it? :) or would you consider it as an on-land watch and reserve a SS version for dives? Just curious as someday when and if I get a 116618, I'd like for the voices of the discerning TRF members to help me decide. I have a sub and a DSSD and I'm not a flipper, but there's something about gold on a boat or in the sea ( I presume).

I have been diving with 18k gold Subs for years. You are right, they do look great on boats, and in the sea! You may want to use your DSSD when diving to avoid scratching the gold from putting on tanks, ship wrecks, etc.

I would never do it. In my opinion the gold one is for drinks after the dive like a dinner jacket.

Your DSSD is THE diving watch; however, I would not hesitate to dive with a gold Sub if it was my only diver...

I've taken my 116619 down. I'd have no hesitation about using any of my Rolexes regardless of material.

Yes sir, my DSSD is a joy to wear and can be termed as a great dive watch. However, I have a soft spot for the ocean and ocean related things and a gold sub is very close to my heart. Wearing one under the ocean will be a high but as it goes with most gold rolexes, one tends to be extra careful using the relative tool watch in its actual element. I don't know if diving with a 116618 will cause scratches, which on a SS watch get surmised as "character" but on a gold watch as utter blemishes.

Just ranting :)

I wouldn't.

This is what SS is for. I have a TT sub, but the gold is just too soft. I'm an active diver. I'm not going to chew up my TT just because I can. Coral is not soft, shipwrecks are even less soft. Add setting up the gear, SS ladders on the boat... Why bother.

I've been diving with my 16613 since 2007 at least twice a year and sometimes a good bit more than that. I have it pressure tested once a year and have yet to have it serviced but I don't give a second thought to the two tone metals used.

Surely you can be without it for just a few hours, it's not that serious.

I would not. Gold is softer and way more exp then SS. I do not consider a gold watch a tool watch at all. On the other side of the coin it will be more corrosion resistant then even 904L. One of these days I will ad a Goldie to my collection but it will get treated as such. That white gold blue sub sure looks nice :). But then again if its a drop in the bucket I would not worry about it at all.

The first Rolex I ever bought was an 18k Sub. Did not buy it just for diving, but at the time it was the only dive watch I owned, so the choice was simple. So yes, I bought a gold watch to also go diving in.

I have steel Subs but when I travel I prefer to take just one watch. So if I'm taking a gold Sub, I'm not taking it off. Ergo it's going under with me.
