Ceramic Sub- biggest mistake ever
Hi All, I just purchased what I always thought to be the ultimate sports watch, However less than 24 hours after walking out of the AD I could not be more uninspired or disappointed.
By way of introduction, I recently celebrated a 40th and thought to mark the occasion I would purchase my first Rolex- I have a Pam 005 and an old style 2002 Breitling Superocean. I remember as a kid seeing all the magazines with the Rolex watches and thought one day I will get one - besides James Bond in the original Sean Connery movies wore one. Anyway as I mentioned I am looking at it here on my dresser and I am quite rankly bored by it- I have no one to blame but myself as I did not have a gun to my head when purchasing - though I do admit to never quite feeling 100% right about it I convinced myself that I needed this watch to validate my significant bday. I could return to the AD shop I purchased however I foolishly removed the protective plastic stoker on the watch so the best they would do is a credit note and much devalued as it is not new- thats how they would see it. What is my best option to get as much of my money back - sell online myself - I have never sold anything on line so have no feedback - people buy the seller and I have no track record, or should I sell to one of the watch dealers you see advertised on the back of magazines. Really annoyed with myself and think this will end my pursuit of watches for ever more:bang head: Any advise much appreciated |

I had a ceramic sub too and liked it but didn't love it.
I don't know what made me feel like that but I much preferred the green sub I had after it and some other watches I've had since with a bit of character. That said it is a fabulous watch, it just didn't hit the mark whenever I looked at it. However maybe give it a bit of time and if you really don't like it, sell it on here and get something maybe a touch cheaper If you want that shouts at you. |

Which Sub did you get? I really like my 114060. Not as wild about the SubC Dates however. Also on the used market there are plenty of subs from different generations of the watch. You might consider trading to get what you want more but first I suggest getting to know the model a bit better.

Hi Padi56, apologies if you thought I was advertising to sell the watch. simply looking for advice on how to minimize my loss on a watch I am disappointed with. Their are a lot of well informed and well intentioned members who I hoped could offer advise.
PS I purchased the 116600 Ceramic date version- If I had to buy the Rolex again I would change for the Black dialed Exp !! I purchased Ceramic date 116610LN - maybe would have enjoyed the new EXP11 Black faced. PS only looking for advise on how best to minimize my loss and appreciate members advise, cheers Last edited by Tools; 26 May 2014 at 01:52 AM.. |

Older and now wiser.
Not to worry, though. There are countless people out there that will gladly snatch up your watch for close to what you paid. It's one of the best watches for a reason. Good luck! |

Have you talked to the AD about buyers remorse?
Most AD's have a 30 day return policy. |

Subs are famously THE quintessential Rolex and very plain looking. I'm puzzled as to why you didn't go GMT2C as they're the exciting incarnation.

The receipt offers 30 day however states in same condition as sold- as mentioned I took of protective stickers and the warranty card was filled out
PS I purchased 116610LN - feel the new Explorer II Black dial may have suited me more Last edited by Tools; 26 May 2014 at 01:52 AM.. |

I have a Sub no date (114060) and personally I absolutely love it. It's my first Rolex and I can't see me getting bored of it. But as they say, each to their own.....
Perhaps if you give it some time it will grow on you? Or as suggested trade for something that does float your boat. |

I think the Sub's simplicity is one of the reasons people get upset by their very presence and that someone would spend thousands when a Citizen Ecodrive or Seiko looks so much more interesting.

If they are an AD they can get it re-stickered and a new warranty card, might cost you £100 or so, but it's a lot less than you'll lose selling it second hand. Probably easier for you would be to exchange it for an Explorer II if you prefer that.
If you're selling, remember the likes of Iconic Watches are already selling them at £5200 brand new, so you're probably looking at £4500-£4800 to the trade, maybe £5000 privately. So i'd try and get to like it, maybe hold onto it till a price rise comes along and then try and recoup slightly more. |

Great all round watch but you gotta love it for that kind of money, imo. Did you try others on? If you like that color combo try the GMT or maybe the new Sea Dweller. You'll get most of your money back and the AD may give full refund if you apply it to another model. Btw, have you checked it out at night? Awesome glow. You can always try older sub, I have 4 and just bought a 16600 sea dweller today. They are timeless. Sent from an iPhone on a secluded island |

OP, sorry to hear about the remorse.....you're not the first, and won't be the last. People lining up on the forum to say 'you can't go wrong with a sub' tend to perhaps paint rather too rosy a picture of the Rolex experience. If the AD will give you full credit, maybe sit on it for a month while you seriously consider the model for you? |

I know I foolishly listened to a lot of posters who claimed the sub was the only watch to wear and can't go wrong etc! I already have my pam 005 back on and happy at least I did not sell it to fund the sub.
Only myself to blame |

Chaps
I can sympathise with the OP because I have done a similar thing. Five months ago I bought a 39mm Explorer and I regard it as the best thing I have ever bought as regards to brightening up my life. I absolutely love the thing and I intended it to be the watch that I would wear every day and probably it would be on my wrist when I die. I got sucked into Rolex enthusiasm, mainly by this forum and two weeks ago I bought a mint 16610 (2003 vintage) with a full service from an AD at a fair price. The plan was to wear the Explorer for the 7 months I am in the UK and wear the Sub for the 5 months I am in Spain. Try as I may, I just cannot whip up any enthusiasm for the Sub and I am counting the days when I am back in the UK and can put the Explorer back on my wrist again. Watches are a personal thing and to me, the Explorer is the ideal watch and I was a fool to buy another. The Explorer is, to me at least, the definitive Rolex. I have 3 sons and strangely enough I would like all three of them to inherit a Rolex. So I will soon be looking for either a GMT or an Explorer2 so as to make my collection up to 3 and then I can eventually pass them on. Regards Mick |

If you can't work something out with your AD, I'd see what trade options are available towards a 216570 in the secondary market. No sense in dwelling on a decision that's already been made. Time to move on.

No need for drama. The ad will take the watch back as exchange for the explorer.
In addition you'll likely get a little money back sans restocking fee. Don't beat yourself up. Not a big mistake. |

Sorry, to disagree with the last mail CKL, but its a little uninspiring…. no looking for swatch with bells and whistles but something more. again I appreciate you like yours I am just disappointed with myself for being a little sheepish and follow what everyone else said. Still you live and you learn and hopefully another price rise from Rolex this year and maybe I can get my money back. PS I would have loved to have gotten a JLC Deep sea Chrono.

Wow, I wish I could say that my biggest mistake ever was something so simple as buying a beautiful dive watch.

Ceramic Sub- biggest mistake ever
Devine -
#1. Relax - a sub a very nice watch which can easily be sold. #2. You can consign the watch with a trusted seller here if you want to squeeze a little more from the sale. Regarding buyer's remorse, sh*t happens. Why don't you wear it for a little bit and see if it grows on you. It is a watch that goes with everything and will work long after you're gone. |

Your AD is probably the best solution. It's not the first time they have had this situation occur. You are also not the first here to do the same thing.
