Ebay Hong Kong watch

I hope this is an okay place for this post ...

There is a blue linen Rolex Date 1501 on Ebay.
The watch is in Hong Kong. The fellow has fewish reviews,
but they are all positive save one, and he accepts
Paypal, so there is some insurance.

This is my Grail of Rolexes.

Should I go for it?

Um ... why "no?" He says "standard shipping".

Please help me on this ... I'm new to international anything.
I have recently purchased two (2) watches through TRF,
and have had excellent experiences!

Rolex watches are not allowed to be shipped to the US and chances are customs will seize it.

I had no idea. Thanks! Any input as to why this particular law exists?

Do a forum search and you'll find lots of threads on this subject.

I noticed the seller has great feedbacks but I still wouldn't risk it.

I bow to your expertise, as I always expected my patients to bow to mine [former anesthesiologist]

Unfortunately, it's exactly what I'm looking for

I'll keep up the search. I'll also have to ask about Beckertime.

An additional question

This seller says he does NOT ship to Germany.

Any input on that?

Well, one thing about ebay is that it requires the seller to be responsible for delivery. No watch then no payment. Seized by customs get your money back.

For me yes; I've bought a number of apparently risky watches on ebay and was always able to get things resolved to my satisfaction. I always use AMEX as a fall back position. If work isn't in the equation then it isn't low risk but if one's willing to do the work to get things resolved then, yes, low risk.

Thank you!

Can you define "work?" Or is this a thermodynamic construct?

The watch looks great, albeit with multiple scratches on the bracelet. The issue is the dial. Vanishingly rare.

I wish my sister had paid attention to what the cleaning people were doing, when they stole My Precious previously.

If you buy on the forum from a trusted seller there is minimal work; no risk and no effort for refund, etc.

If you buy on ebay and things don't go as planned then there is effort to get the refund and do the convincing of those who control the money flow. The emails and phone calls if needed amount to work from my pov.

Damn, thermo is just too far in the past. No heat balance here.

Not to mention what previous posters have noted:Confiscation by The Feds on import to the US of A.

My "issue" would be that this particular seller has had a good record of getting stuff into the US of A. And, given the rarity [surprisingly] of this particular item, it might be worth the challenge. What the hell!

This seems to be the official story on imports regardless of where they come from.

Ebay Hong Kong watch

As previous respected members have eluded, Rolex USA the owner of the trademark in the US with the help of the US customers make it illegal to ship a Rolex from overseas into the US. Customs will seize the watch. It's too much headache (not talking about financial risk).
However, it's possible that you get a Rolex overseas and enter the states wearing it.

I'd contact some of the trusted sellers here, or visit the vintage section for a list of vintage dealers. Good luck!

There is an actual law about this. Read the post in the link above. You can enter the US wearing it and I think you are allowed one piece only. Rolex USA has the right to grant permission to a watch to be cleared from customes, but this is done only through them.

Protectionism is wrong in every form.
Still...it is what it is as they say too...pity when you are looking for something rare or not available here.

One question you need to ask yourself is why the seller wants to sell on Ebay?
Hong Kong is mega capital for Rolex, and there is a instant market for all prices and conditions. So Why would the seller want to pay the 10% Ebay commission, 3% paypal when he can do a face to face transaction in HK?

That is a stunning dial. I love OP Dates and that's one of the sexiest ones I've ever seen! The oval-link Jubilee is a nice bonus.

Well, since it's the mega capital of Rolex, it's an incredibly competitive environment to sell in. Why wouldn't he sell on eBay?
