Icon9 May I see your ID?

Yesterday I was shopping in a local outdoor mall and walked into the Jared, which is a local chain store. They have signs splattered on the windows for Rolex at 35% off.

The deal there is that they carry about a dozen fairly undesirable pre-owned models and try to sell them for 35% off of current MSRP. ie they have a DJ that is 15 years old, probably cost $3k new, but is now priced at $4500 so they try and get $3k for it. These prices are always well over what they should be for a used watch.

Anyway.... they have a nice looking President and I have been considering one. I asked a saleswoman if I could see it. She came all the way across the store and then says, if I want to see the president then I need to see an ID.

I was just stunned. I looked at her baffled and then just turned around and walked out the door without a word.

Not that it matters but I was dressed for the office and sporting my new Bluesy Sub.

Mind you this was not the inner city, this is in Nashua NH in a mall with a store selling socks next door. There was only one other customer in the entire store.

I thought about going back later and talking to a store manager about what I assume is a store policy, but I assume it would do no good and they would not care.

I was less offended that I might steal the watch, I was more worried about the sales tactic of taking a person's license and not giving it back when they are ready to leave. I had that happen at a car dealership when I took a car for a test drive. They tried to hold me hostage while the salesman worked on me.

If theft is a problem then they should get a guard or better salespeople.

Maybe next time I am nearby I will stop in and flash the Bluesy or DSSD and make sure they know they missed a sales opportunity. (I still know they won't care.....)

Maybe their insurance requires it. At a Royal Maui (before they knew me) they take your ID, and put in the case where the watches are. I was told their insurance makes them do it.

Never heard of this before, nor would I have any part of it either.

Im sure this is based on previous bad experiences they have had. It's unfortunate that honest people have to be subjected to this...

Weird, but I would've left too. I would feel insulted, store policy or not!

Is there a Porsche idling outside, I understand if they are careful.

Don't know why but reminds me of the time I took my mom to Mayor's in Dadeland Mall to go buy a WG Skydweller.

In all fairness my shirt had a food stain on it (vacation pasta) and my clothes were a tight fit because I'd gained a few pounds but I did have the cash for it, I'm not the kind of person who goes "window shopping".

I was pretty pissed when I asked what sort of discount I could get and the salesman asked me if "I knew how this works". Really wanted the watch so I didn't say anything; gave him my hotel number and said they would call back with a price so we could close the deal. They never did and I never went back.

Now I just deal with my local AD, they do the same sort of thing but at least once you buy a watch they treat you better.

It's pretty stupid to judge people by how they look, I've seen millionaires who look like beggars and wannabes who look like millionaires. I've had this happen a few times so I guess it says something about me too lolz :D.

I have never had that happen but would walk right out if they did ask. I tried on a The Platinum Daytona the other day and with out hesitation the sales girl handed it right to me not questions asked.

Interesting. Last week I was in a mall AD in the northeast and asked to
see a day-date. Rolex counter was near the front entrance. I was on family
vacation, so shorts/teeshirt. Had my ExpII on.

Guy pulls it out and says 'sure, come with me'. So I follow him to the
back, figuring, ok, there's a seating area, whatever. We go into a small
office; there's another guy on the phone at the desk. He hands me the
watch standing there. Now I'm thinking he wanted me in the back of
the store to discourage me running off with it. Ok, fine.

As it turns out, on the table is a box from Rolex. They had just gotten a
shipment of watches, including two of the new SD, a BLNR, couple of DJII,
latest milgauss, LVc. They're all sitting on the table in the little plastic cases.

So we start shooting the s*it about the new watches, after a few minutes we
go back out front and he pulls out some others on display for me to try.
Overall a good visit; it clearly started with him sizing me up and being cautious,
and then realizing that I might be a possible customer after
demonstrating some knowledge.

I do give him high marks for being subtle about it.

In your case I would go back and talk with the store manager. If it's
store policy, then can't do much about it. If it was the saleslady sizing
you up and giving you the brush-off, then the manager would probably
appreciate knowing that she's doing that kind of thing.

Regards.

Here, to get in and out of watch stores, security buttons must be pressed and usually a guard is manning the door. So, no IDs are requested.... Not sure which approach is better.

That's the way of it. A handful always muddy the waters for the majority. Reminds me of a member who was asked by a salesperson at BB if he could afford the YM he wanted to check out. I'd have shown that associate the door if I'd been manager.

That was the other weird part.... this was in the way back of an outdoor mall. No way to get a car in there. Maybe ride a motorcycle on the sidewalks? I would have to run 300 yards to the parking lot. Evan a fat mall cop on a Segway could catch me!

Yeah, leaving is the best option. I've never been asked for ID and I've handeled Pt pealmasters and Patek's before. Taking a fake ID from a theif isn't any form of security. Don't let them blame their "insurance", even if they do require them to take ID, they chose that insurer/policy, and if they want to save a few bucks at the expense of customer service I'd let them know how I feel about it.

That's Jared for you. I refuse to do business at all with Jared because of a particular sign on their door and my strong beliefs, I'll leave it at that as not to upset the mods.

Some stores just have odd policies

the IWC boutique in Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive
wouldn't even let me inside, they kept assuming im looking or at the wrong store,
I was in Basket ball shorts and a T-shirt and sandals, I wasn't aware there was a dress code to eye shop

I was right next door at Cartier Picking up a few things I bought for me and my ex (Gf at the time)

and as i was walking by i saw the IWC literally right next door, behind it so I tried to take a peak and the security stood infront of me not letting me pass him, and the sales said he thinks I may have the wrong store in interest.

Till this day, I never look at a IWC although it's not IWC's fault it was that stupid boutique.

Anyways, Word got around rodeo (I shop at LV, Hermes, Prada, Cartier) And I won't say who but someone i buy a lot from happens to know the one in charge of that area for IWC boutiques.
They got my number and invited me for grand opening at South Coast, I excitedly rejected it :D
