Pretty good point here. Bezel could come in handy.

The Explorer gets way more wrist time from me. And if you're using your hands all day it's much more comfortable and almost disappears on the wrist.

Easy answer - both.
Complicated but logical answer - Explorer II 40mm
Passionate answer - whichever one speaks to you the most.
Truthful answer - whichever you get, you will pine for the other. Go pre-owned and get both.

I own neither but really like both. I am blessed with a few sports models and the Explorer I has been calling me for some time.

If you want something very recognizable get a Sub. I went with the Explorer when I faced the same dilemma. I thought I'd at least get the Sub next, but ended up with the GMTII... I really like the Sub, but at the same time I want to wear something I don't see very often here in Vegas. Maybe one day I'll pick up a birth year Sub 5513. So even if it's a very common Rolex, there's a story behind it to make it special to me. In the end you go with whichever you want based on what you value cause if you're gonna drop that much cash into a watch, might as well have some sort of personal reason on why you picked it, not because we're here telling you which one we like between the two.

+1

I went with the Explorer and have been very happy with it. I wear it everyday no matter what I'm going to be doing. Nobody notices I'm wearing a Rolex and I like it that way.
