Well, I agree with a lot of the posters that said a Rolex is a little much for a 16 year old. I know there are younger members here that feel a need to stick up for every teenager, but a Rolex is a pretty significant amount of money, and to me something that should be earned.

Heck, I'm 34, and I've worked very hard to get where I am in life. Last year in order to get a Rolex I sold an ATV and a diamond that I found. Otherwise, there is no way I could justify the funds on a watch. This is coming from a watch nut that already owned a dozen watches including Breitling and Omega.

OP, I think you should take her to pick her own watch out if you are going through with the purchase.

I am not a girl, and it's been a long time since I was 16.

I am also not to be considered an arbiter of style.

With those caveats, I don't like the floral dial. It may look good when you're 16, but it may clash with her tastes when she's older.

I would recommend a 31mm DJ, fluted bezel, with a fairly simple dial. That watch will always be in style, it's a classic look that people will appreciate now or in 40 years. It's not too flashy and won't attract the wrong kind of attention. To me, a classic Rolex suggests you appreciate subtle quality over flash, long term value over seasonally changing style, and quiet confidence in a product well made.

I would get her a more plain dial. The floral dial is perfect for a younger girl, but now that she is 16 she will be growing up fast. Will she still appreciate it in a few short years when she is more mature? I also think it is a kinda fad look that would be cool for short while but would get old really quickly over time.

I purchased a SS GMT II as a bar mitzvah present to my son. Yes, even I agree that 13 is a bit young for such a gift. However, we are a Rolex wearing family and I wanted to buy him something that would last for many years. At first, we only let him wear it on special occasions. At 17, he has grown into it and appreciates how special owning a Rolex is. He now wears responsibly on a daily basis. I would not have done it over any differently.

As noted, it's up to the parent how to treat their child. That being said, if I were to buy a Rolex for my high school child, I'd show it to them, and put it in the safe and tell them they can have it when they graduate college/university.

There is no shame in taking her shopping and letting her pick her own, but maybe call the AD in advance and have them set aside a few options that are within the price range you are looking for. That way she has a few selections and things don't get too fussy with too many options....you might be there all day!
