Explorer 2

I have Rolex Explorer II which I have had for just over 20 years. The crystal has a small chip on one side, and a couple of the numbers on the bezel have come off. The one thing I don't really like now is that the dots on the face are now yellow rather than bright white as with more modern explorers.

I know that I can get all this changed at a cost, but when I recently went into a rolex dealer (not an official one) the guy in there told me that I shouldn't change the face because it's vintage and it will devalue the watch.

Is this true?

It depends. Only if you are going to sell it and that may vary too.
Otherwise, get it serviced how you like it.
You can always keep the vintage dial and hands then put them back on when you decide to sell it.

Yes. About 79-80% of the perceived "value" of a Vintage piece is impacted by original dial and/or hands.

But again, no issue if you are not selling.

Enjoy!

Yeah, there are some folks out there who like tritium dials with discolored markers. And a few out there who might be willing to pay a little extra for one. Still, tritium Explorer II's are not as desirable/collectible as say, tritium Subs and Sea Dwellers.

If though, as others have said, you want to keep and enjoy the watch with refreshed lume, get the dial changed. If you think about selling, keep it as is.

Hope that helps.

I'm more of a vintage guy, so yes it's true. Two things u can do if it bothers u that much. Sell it and get another, or replace it with a service dial n keep the original.
