A watch you don't wear BUT don't need the money
Hi follks,
Here is a dilemma I am dealing with --- I have a 16613 I bought in pristine condition last year. I just do not wear it. I am done with watches. They just do not hold the magic for me anymore. Rolex, seiko, casio, I just do not care to wear them anymore. If I sell it, I get some cash but I do not need the money. There is no other watch I want to buy, no bills to pay nothing. Like the watch sits in the safe, the money wil sit in the bank. So what would you do? |

The watch is bugging you - or else you wouldn't asked on the forum. Sell it and spend the money on your family, gifts, charity and/or fun stuff and get the 16613 out of your system :)

Keep it. It is not uncommon to go through different phases when it comes to watches. Happened to me app 10 years ago. Lost all interest in watches, but kept my humble collection and man was I happy five years later when the interest came back for no obvious reason.

Hang in there, man! Mine lasted close to five years. Dont really know why the bug left me; plenty of other interests and an empty feeling that watch collecting was only about cash, I guess. But it is not, its about technology, design, being part of a long tradition, collecting something for the next generation.

If you've lost the interest and you don't need the money, I'd just keep it. The interest may come back sooner than you think.

If its only a year since you bought it then I would suggest you hang on to it for 2 reasons, firstly you might just one day want to put a nice watch on your wrist, if you keep it you can and secondly, you might not get all your money back by selling so soon.
So yeah keep it in the safe for now. |

Sell it surely?
If I had no interest in something and I didn't need the cash I would sell it anyway unless it was sentimental |

At least the money will accrue interest (even if only minimally). I'm not an expert like many here but the 16613 isn't a rare watch that will appreciate materially, is it? If not, then you can always repurchase it or have the flexibility to purchase whatever tickles your fancy when/if the interest in watches comes back. Just my $0.02. |

Lets assume the watch is worth $7000 as is. If I sell for $7K, I get $7K(DUH!!)
If the max interest I get is 1.5%, then that is $105 ... So next year, at this time, my $7000 has become $7105. I wonder how much the sub itself will be worth next year at this time? |

In photography, we can run into the same thing, but it is fairly easy to do things to spark interest again. Can you isolate why you lost interest, or what you were really excited about before and has changed? I hope everything is good in your life and it's not a sign of other problems.
I think if I had anything of value, and I lost interest, I would sell it and put the money towards another hobby or try to develop new interests. There's always something, or some place one has not seen, experienced, or owned that needs to be discovered. |

If you do not need the money I would keep the watch, leave it in nice condition and if in a couple of years the interest do not come back you can sell it with profit or leave it for your childeren (if you have any).

I know today if I sell, I can get my money out of it. I am breaking even.
A yr from now, lets say it has gone up by 5% so now it is worth $7400. To find a buyer who is willing to pay you that much, and then shipping and insuring it and doing all the legwork, the added increase in the watch price is not some profit you will pocket. |

I wish I also had this financial dilemma. I'd just sell it. Money doesn't seem like an issue to you, you can buy again if you want to. Do you not like the feel of a watch on your wrist or just don't like Rolex anymore? If it's neither, I don't see why you don't just wear it daily as if it were just a $20 Casio with the pure intent of knowing the time just by looking at your wrist. No magic necessary, just good old fashioned knowing what time is it.

Keep it, if your interest in watches renews itself then you will be glad you did. If you don't need the cash there is really no need to get rid of it.

Well honestly I would just sit on it for a while to see if the interest does come back. Maybe break it out and wear it for a day. Maybe wearing it will renew the love.

One watch, and a nice watch at that...and since you have no other use for the money, I would say keep it, even if you never wear it. Wait another year or so, if you have no interest in wearing it at that point, then sell it if it's still on your mind.

The good thing is that you don't need to do anything now (which is what I'd recommend). Even though you don't wear it, you don't need to sell it. Something sparked enough interest for you to buy it last year, and you never know if that spark will return. I've rekindled the spark with a couple of my lesser-worn watches while my others have been in for service. So I'd say make yourself wear it occasionally and see what happens. You won't beat it up and decrease its value. If it still doesn't make the sparks come back after say another 6 months, then I'd sell it.

Sell them all and wait until you decide that you want one again, if ever.

Wait. Time is on your side.
I don't want to get into your business, but if you're losing interest in other things that formerly gave you joy, then you may need to evaluate your circumstances with a professional. If you're just moving on to new things, then give yourself some time to think it out. No one here can help with this decision. You'll know what to do when the time comes.
