Yes not all are ETA. In house movement are great but they are not on lower end model. I maybe someday buy a Panerai too.

Concur. If the ill-informed want to trash another brand it would be be best in a section where people actually know what they are talking about instead of a Rolex fanboy section. Okay, I'm a pain in the ass. I really appreciate Rolex, but I don't think it helps the discussion or advocacy of Rolex to dismiss the facts and fail to make honest comments. We should be honest about Rolex and the other brands at all times. |

I'm a Rolex enthusiast, but I appreciate other watches too, especially the Pam 51, Luminor Marina. Awesome watch.

Both my Pams are now worth more (+$1000) than I paid for them, and I have standard models - 112 and 164. My Rollies however have lost money.

i like that gold panny,
i think they are quite handsome how do they stand up to scratches, i mean are they easily scratched in SS or Gold because of the size and exposure and do they have a good service back up like Rolex? |

One should be mindful that the Daytona had a Zenith movement (not in-house) for a period of time and earlier on had a 72B Valjoux movement. Those watches, especially some of the Valjoux movements Cosmographs are now around $100,000.
Given that Valjoux was taken over by ETA then we may in fact say some Rolex models with ETA movements are worth around $100,000.

Panerai employs several different movements - inhouse, ETA, Unitas, Valjoux, vintage Angelus and JLC. It just depends on the model.
Why so much for Panerai? Limited production and good fit/finish/detail on the cases, straps, packaging, etc. Movement aside on the more generic pieces, they really are much nicer watches than the typical Rolex, IMHO...and I've loved Rolex for years. |

I finally noticed a Panerai in the wild the other day at the O'Hare Airport. Before joining TRF, I wouldn't have noticed it or known it was anything interesting. And frankly until I saw his, I didn't realize they had a cyclops - I never really studied those shown on TRF. It's not too bad looking, but not my bag baby.

I fully agree with those who believe that we do not need to trash other brands, including Panerai, in order to re-enforce our Rolex preferences.
As a watch lover with a great deal to learn, I love and admire many brands and styles. To me the whole fun of the watch hobby is learning to appreciate a wide variety of watches. I think that not being able to see more than one small segment of a field or only one side of an issue is intellectual lazyness. e.g. even in politics, if I support Obama, I do not need to call Bush an "idiot" (which he is not) to validate my preference. I find the prices for Panerai are very similar to the Rolex prices. I like Panerai and I may even own one someday, perhaps if I do not get a Deep Sea
This post reminds me of a recent thread about Rolex Haters: Quote:

The only drawback for Panerai is their service. I have one and I like it a lot but their service keeps me from getting a second one due to limited parts inventory and long turnaround time (partly due to waiting time on parts)

Only time will tell, but I sure wish I'd bought 10 of 'em when I first got into them 8 years ago. The dollar was strong, I lived in Florence, and they were downright inexpensive. Now, the prices on some of the vintage models, the 203, the 127, and others...unbelievable!

Rolex are wayyyyyy to expensive.
Panerai even more so....now tey are flavour of the month the prices have shot up. As much as I whinge, b*tch and gripe about Rolex, I'd spend my hardearned on a Rolex way before I shelled out on one of those Italian monsters! J |
