i just insured my 10 year old DJ Thunderbird - wish I would of done it sooner. The watch has spent the vast majority of its life in the safe and one of the primary reasons was my fear of "something" happening to it. Since it is discontinued I chose to insure for the original MSRP. It looks like I would have no problem replacing it for that value with any one of a number of trusted sellers on this site. I know that a true replacement would probably be a current DJ but since this was a gift from my Dad and he selected the Thunderbird then if something happened to it I would want it replaced with the same model.
No problems with Jewelers Mutual - I sent the original receipt and Rolex papers and cost me $78 annually with no deductible to insure for $6300. |

I have to look into insurance for my collection. It doesn't seem that adding it to homeowners is the best move. If anyone cod give me some info on how it all works of appreciate it. Maybe I'll have to start my own thread.

Lots of threads on this. If you insure thru homeowners you will get a separate property policy. You can choose a deductible $500 etc to save some money. You need appraisals for each watch in order to be covered.

I have my DJ, DSSD, Nomos and wife's wedding ring version 3.0 (third ring, same wife) insured on my homeowners insurance with AAA. I have to look at what I am paying, I am sure it is too much comparatively speaking.

I just went to the website and put in the details and then applied for the policy. Had to submit documentation - I submitted the original 10 year old receipt and Rolex papers - without that I would have needed a separate appraisal I guess. The next day I received an email with link to the bill, policy, and declarations page which included my exact watch and serial number based upon the documentation I attached. I was concerned that the original receipt wouldn't be accepted but I had no problems. Wish I would of done it sooner.

So I received a letter from JM recommending that I get a current appraisal - however they did insure for the value of my original purchase. The letter indicates that in the event of a claim they would work with a jeweler to repair or replace the watch. How would something like this be handled with a discontinued watch? Since my Thunderbird is no longer in production it seems like it would be difficult to replace at an authorized dealer. It doesn't appear that JM would issue a check but rather pay up to my insured value.
I guess I will look into getting an appraisal update in the near future. Still not sure how the Thunderbird would be replaced if lost. Perhaps with a regular Datejust? |

Insurance is usually a replacement policy, not one that gets you another watch exactly like the one you have.
This is why they are recommending that you get an updated "appraisal" for a current Datejust as it would likely be the replacement. The only time that you actually have to get your watch truly "appraised" is if you are insuring it for it's collector value that may be considerably more than replacement cost for a current model..

Not sure how to answer your replacement question but JM does provide me with peace of mind. Why don't you just give them a call and ask?
Larry's answer makes perfect sense though.
