What's everyone doing for lent!
As someone studying for the catholic priesthood I am a bit curious. What is everyone giving up or doing for this Lenten season. I'm just curious and would appreciate anyone sharing their penance, alms giving or prayer intentions this Lenten season. :)

I'm not Catholic, but I've had to give up so many things in my old age that I think I'm covered for this lifetime. Those are mugs of diet root beer.

I don't doubt there are plenty here who observe this type of tradition and can compare their choice (or not) of forgoings. Since I've not been brought up this or any other way I'm not doing anything different than any other period but I must say that I can't see me wanting to eat another darned pancake for a month or twelve.

Giving up salt for Lent. I use too much of it and, to me, it's a sacrifice (of sorts) to go without it. I did it once before and hoped that I'd get used to living without it. I didn't.

Hi Mike, love the bentley. and i'm giving up Nutella.
but this thread made me think of this funny dialogue from Cannonball Run's Burt, Dom, Sammy and Deano. #1 Fenderbaum: [Fenderbaum and Blake's Ferrari drives alongside J.J.'s ambulance] Pull over! We want to give you our blessing! Victor Prinsi: J.J., there are two priests in that car. They want us to pull over. J.J. McClure: Victor, that's two priests driving a Ferrari. When's the last time you saw two priests drive a Ferrari? What are they doing, taking home the bingo money? Victor Prinsi: No, they're doing the work of the Lord. In a Ferrari, they can just do it faster. #2 Fenderbaum: We've got a secret weapon. God is our co-pilot! The Greek: You'll need him! Jamie Blake: *God* is our copilot? Fenderbaum: Uh huh... Jamie Blake: Remember our car? Fenderbaum: Uh huh... Jamie Blake: Two seats? Fenderbaum: Two seats... Jamie Blake: Where's he gonna sit? [smack] Jamie Blake: Where's he gonna sit? [smack] i love this forum! |

I do work at "Bishop Zubik's house," as your locksmith.
Even though we're protestant, we have fish on Fridays. As well, come join us for fish at Keith Heinritz Catering at 209 Brinton Ave in Trafford, my brother! We eat early at around 3:30-4:30 Fridays during lent. IF you come in, simply ask at the register if the locksmith is in. Deacon Craig : ) ^Turner's Iced Tea^

For me, it's candy and alcohol.
Not gonna be easy, either.

Not Lent, but after grossly over doing it when the Redskins won the Superbowl in 1987, I gave up alcohol for the month of February. February has been dry ever since.

Lent kind of snuck up on me this year and didn't even realize Ash Wednesday was today until Father Joe mentioned it in mass last Sunday. I gave it some thought and I'm giving up sweets. It's not so much a helath thing but the fact that I enjoy them so much so I think it will be a real reminder (not in scale but due to the frequency in which I indulge) of the sacrifice made for me. Maybe we should keep the thread going through the Lenten season?

I am giving up talking to Monty, I may refer to him but I will not address him directly.

Not for lent but last year I gave up sugar and carbs as my blood sugar was getting high and diabetes runs in my family, one year on and I've lost twenty kgs, doctor initially wanted 5kgs, and blood sugar is normal, and now I eat 1 portion of carbs a day, usually chocolate or cake, and haven't put any weight back on in 3 months. Only diet/eating plan that has ever worked for anyone I know.

If in town make sure you stop at one of these 3 places on a Friday: E Town Bar & Grille in Etna, Sunny Jim's Tavern on Camp Horne Road and The Robert Wholey Co. in the Strip District.

Yunz NEED to pop over to my end of town and join me at Keith's Catering at 209 Brinton Ave in Trafford (15085) around 3-4 almost any Friday in Lent. You have my number, so set me know if you can make it one Friday. Mike B (from Ct.) and me at Keith's, last year... The coleslaw and the mac and cheese, both homemade, are killer!

The old joke is "I gave up zeppelin flying for Lent". But living in Minneapolis, I think I gave up being warm for Lent, given the late surge of winter weather.
But in reality, I give up TV for Lent. A nice break. Listen to a lot of music and read closer to the volume I did in college. Then MLB season starts in early April, and I catch up by watching MLB Extra Innings. |

For two years, i gave up listening to Judas Priest and then Megadeth. I think that this year, i may try to give up another band that i listen to regularly. Perhaps playing the guitar. That'd be hard. Perhaps, i don't know.

I haven't thought about it yet. Normally I do something, even if it is minimal. I know I know! What a sad Catholic I am! I did participate in Ash Wednesday today however. I think Easter this year is gonna pass me by. Too much going on. Otherwise, I might give up cursing. But h***, maybe not.

I gave up a tooth for lent.
I am getting an implant because the root of an old root canal tooth cracked, so I had the tooth pulled yesterday. I have to wear some sort of apparatus called a flipper until June. I guess I can eat with it, but it feels weird. I took communion with it in. |
