Serial number

My head is spinning tryin g to figure out if the serial number on this watch is legit and I should purcahse this watch for my husband.
I have seen many different sites re: serial numbers and it appears that the 1950's are a cluster f+#@%!!
Any insiterest anyone could give me into wheather this is a good purchase is appreciated!

Says its recently sold. The serial seems right for 1958. Dial is not original or possible repaint a either way it's not from pre 1960. Looks ok in general if that's what you think he'll like.

Rolex rebooted the serial numbering system in the mid 50s, making those online serial# database things useless (Bob's Watches, etc). Here's a good overview of what serial numbers roughly match which year: http://www.minus4plus6.com/numbers.htm

1259699 - 1965
1289727 - 1966
1554000 - 1967
2163900 - 1967
2426800 - 1968
2060000 - 1969
2504211 - 1970

I guess it means that these serials have been found with those case back dates. Similar numerical inconsistency can be found on the much more detailed Serial Numbers Project at VRF as I recall.
