A month with only 30 days?

I realized that April has only 30 days. Should I wait til after 4am to set it with the quickset to date 1 or is it ok to do it between 12-4am?

NEVER fiddle with the date wheel between the hours of 8 pm and 2 am.

Want to set it? Do it the previous evening, i.e. jump it forward to 31 and the next morning it will automatically show up as 1.

Or you can do it the next morning when you find the watch showing 31. Just unscrew the crown to position 1 and flick it forward one date to show 1.

Actually, with Rolex movements with quick date change feature, you can adjust the date at whatever time you want without harming the date changing mechanism.

However, on watches that have non or semi instantanious change change, you would want to avoid changing the date between 10 PM and 2 AM.

Question is, though, why one would wanna change the date around midnight? Personally, when needed, I change the date of my Rolex like JJ stated when I wake up in the morning.

I am totally new to the Rolex seen, but why should one not adjust their date between these given times? (10pm-2am)

It's 8 pm to 2 am!!

The reason is technical. It's at this point that the date mechanism of the watch is getting ready for the midnight change over.

It's a time when you DON'T want to fiddle around with the date mechanism manually.

Like I advised, just do it the previous night or, if you've gone past 8 pm wherever you live, wait until tomorrow morning when your watch will show 31.....and then flick it over to show 1.

Oh I see, I imagine this applies to all days, not just 31 --> 1, right?

That's right.....just don't touch the date wheel between 8 pm and 2 am - any date.

I thought ABS has said previously if you have a Rolex it doesn't matter when you change the date, as the Rolex movement has been engineered to avoid damage no matter what time you set the date change.

You can change the date in any direction you like and at any time you like, but only with the GMT-II movement....3185 or 3186.....because this movement has been so designed for the purpose it was intended for.

Date change?

Sorry to bring up this tired thread again but here it is another short month. I never can remember....what is the definitive answer on when to change the date? I keep thinking it's to avoid changing between 10 PM and 10 AM. Or is it 10 PM and 8 AM? What the ?.

Well, I would still say that with modern Rolex watches with quick date change you would not harm the movement by changing the date manually around midnight. This does not only apply to the GMT II.

With most other watches that have non or semi-instant date change (some start changing date already at 8 PM!), I would avoid changing the date from say 8 PM to 2 AM (where most watches would have shifted date).

I'm not sure of the exact hours, but you'll be safe changing the date after waking up in the morning... assuming you don't get up at 3AM.

If it's a Rolex you're adjusting it probably doesn't matter. Some watches engage gearing toward midnight and it's best not to force the issue. Since we're talking a single day adjustment why don't you just wind around to 1 May?

I usually set my watches to noonish when I want to rapidly adjust the date. All watches engage and disenage from the date function differently, but midday is certainlly safe. I think my Concord has an explicit warning about adjusting between 10pm and 4am.

Bo touched on this briefly above, but I thought I'd back up his comment. GMT owners definitely DO NOT need to worry about this. Changing dates and times at ALL hours are what GMTs were built for. You cannot harm the movement by changing the date on a GMT, not matter what the time.

I always change date at 6 o´clock, then there will be no problems. Adjusting moonphase,
calenders ect, ect works great there too. I do this with all of my watches no matter what
brands they are, I think it´s the best way to do.

I advanced mine to the 31st yesterday evening while sitting around being lazy. When I woke up this morning it was already reading the 1st.

Still, one question:

I can 't remember Rolex mentioning smth about this issue in their manuals...
Wouldn't they - if there was a potential danger?

This could only mean that the whole story is a myth ...

I believe there is something published about it... I don't know where to find it, though. Maybe someone else knows where it is.

Nowhere in new manuals. Maybe in older ones, years ago.
This could only mean that the issue is exaggerated, smth that used to be true but has just survived over the years as a rumor...

Otherwise Rolex would be liable for any damage - since they mention nothing in the manuals.
And I don't think Rolex lacks good lawyers to give this advice ...

Whilst you are correct on most watches, my understanding is that it does not matter on later Rolex watches with quickset date mechanism.

Spacey,

You're corrrect on this one... Since the late 1970's, Rolex has engineered their quickset watches to be able to be set at any time.. And the GMT II can also be set backwards....at any time. Rolex uses a spring lever and detent/roller so at midnight the roller slips into a detent on the proper cog, and at that time, a lever is released which fllips the date over instantaneously.

Many watches however cannot. Omega, for instance, still warns about setting the date between 8 and 2. The date wheel, pinions, and gears start to engaage at this time and forcing them to move can bend or break parts.. so many folks and watchmakers recommend that you get into a habit of not changing any watch at that time.

I waited until this morning to change the date. This morning at 9am to be exact. Also reset the watch for the next 30day test for accuracy.

I think when this was previuosly posted I thought it was not correct. If it was the case then Rolex would have a very clear warning in their literature. They could not run the risk of the world changing dates between the hours of X & Y.
So all in all perhaps an urban myth?
