Submariner:Which is stronger-Gold Versus Steel?

I was wondering just how strong a gold case would be compared with the steel case? Are they both equal under pressure?

Well, both the SS and YG Sub Date are waterproof to 300 metres under water. So in that sense, they're equally strong under pressure.

However, under the "pressure" of everyday wear, stainless steel is harder than 18 KT gold, making the YG Sub Date more proned to getting scratched.

Understood-Yet Rolex never produced an SD (not to mention offer an SDDS) in gold, did they? Was the softer profile of Gold a factor?

Although Stainless is harder, it seems more fitting that a divers watch be gold so you would'nt have to worry about salt water. Also softness in terms of metal is kind of a relative term. It's not like you can whittle it like a piece of wood for crying out loud. I can't imagine a tough pro diver worrying about a few scratches!

I think a solid gold divers watch would last as long as any SS model. From a sheer hardness scale the SS is harder. I do not think it is really any more durable in a lightly loaded watch application.

I just think the cost to produce and purchase one in gold would get only a handful out to the general public..
