Telling people how much you paid
So about a week ago I bought my first rolex TT DJII. I am young and figured why not.
I enjoy luxury things however I am not one to brag or show off. it usually makes me uncomfortable if someone point out or asks me where/how much I got something for. I have only had it about a week. So I haven't really had too much contact with friends and family yet. But if they notice it I can already envision them asking me how much I bought it for. As that is usually a question I get from them. I don't hangout with wealthy people or have a rich family so telling them how much I spent so makes me uncomfortable. As I don't want it seem as if I am bragging What do you guys do if someone asks how much you've spent on your watch? Sent from my iPhone |

"Too much"
or "Why, are you going to buy one?"

Tell them to start shopping and they'll find out; I personally don't like it when others ask. My friend asked about my SubC? I wouldn't say; he asked, "over $1000?" I said, "over double that." If they are really curious they can figure it out.
When I got my Harley years ago, a fellow at a gas station felt he was entitled to know how much I paid for it. He almost wanted to fight because I wouldn't tell him. Damned Cretans are everywhere. |

I literally just smile and say i'm not saying! My Brother and Mother have asked out of interest but I would never say. They just know they are not cheap.
I do not feel anything wearing my watches in front of anyone apart from certain dubious areas or people which we all have around us at times. I enjoy them, I am wearing them no matter what.

I usually say the truth: not as much as you'd think. I find people have a perception that a Rolex is more expensive than it actually is. So they can look it up if they like.

Personally, I think it's a very rude question. Here's my stock answer: "How I spend my money is none of your concern."

Here's what I say: "I paid less for it than you paid for your car. And unlike your car, it will never be worth zero."

If you're comfortable with the person who's asking then tell them if not then don't.

I there are two types who ask that question, people who know how much they're worth and may also be in the market for one and just want to check if you got a good discount etc, they may be ok to talk to. Then there are people who have no idea how much they are worth. If you tell this second lot, their response will almost always leave you feeling defensive and negative, the only defense you have against this is not to equalise the knowledge between you and them.

I'd tell them that's the equivalent of asking a woman how much she weighs,,,

Close family like my parents know but the rest doesn't need to know, although most of my classmates know what I paid since I'm in watchmaking school...

Venturing one toe slightly outside the off-topic house, I've seen this question asked several times in my short time as a member here. Every time, several people respond with something along the lines of "if they really want to know, the can look it up."
My question is, where exactly can retail prices be looked up? And back on topic, depends who's asking. Sometimes, a single look can be enough to let people know they've over-stepped the mark.

Really depends on the person who is asking. Assuming it's not a stranger, people usually fall into two categories.
Someone who is genuinely interested and maybe even want to buy something similar. They are the ones who can understand and won't scoff at the idea of spending thousands on a watch. Or someone who is asking for the sake of asking and wants to take the conversation down a more negative path. With the former, I have no issues telling people how much something costs. Close friends and family that I know understand get honest answers. With everyone else, I just tell them that I don't like discussing things like that. If they take offense to that, so be it.

I have a standard answer for any time someone asks me what I paid for something that is expensive:
"Enough that I'd rather not say." I've found it to be just the right blend of "that's a rude question that I'm not answering" and self-depricating enough that it's usually the end of it. |

We are in the same boat. I try to be vague and just say I don't remember it was awhile ago, or if they're pushy or being jerks I tell them I paid what it cost or an answer along the same lines. Sometimes I pull out the, it's not real.
