What an education on 1680 Sub today

I took my 1680 Sub into the Rolex Dealer today for their complete inspection and offer to buy. The guy offered $600.... but said it needed a band which I knew was seeing it's last days. They quoted me $1450 out the door for a new band. He also said the bezel was a replacement and the acrylic crystal was a replacement.....but otherwise was not a fake and said he wanted to get me some certificate of whatever from Rolex..? Anyway, I refused the offer and will get a Rolex band later. He tried to steer me into a new Rolex and wanted to at least take this one on trade.

So I'm not letting it go and will get another band later or see if I can find a better priced alternative.

Bezel or bezel insert? 2 very different prices should you want to replace them.

Search around for bracelets, they pop up often enough for good pricing. Personally, I'd be looking for a 93150. Easier to come by and much sturdier IMO. For now, slap that baby on a nice NATO and enjoy it.

The RSC in Dallas will probably get you close to that 1450 number with a new proper bracelet and full service.

Replacement acrylic crystals are no big deal except for purists..

I'm pretty sure he just fishing... I expected at least $3000 if he wanted to service it and make a little profit...but $600 was just a lowball and I wasn't really interested in selling anyway. Once he confirmed the authenticity of the piece....it was all I needed to know.

$600... He was a scumbag IMHO. Even $3000 could be a pretty lowball offer if your watch is in reasonable condition.

The dealer did mention a "Service" dial but I don't know what that meant, cause he followed up with "but that's perfectly acceptable" comment. This is going to be a daily wear item anyway. I've already been hit up by a buyer who wants it. BUT I'm going to sit on it.

Nice piece.
You can send that band to Michael Young "classic watch repair" in Hong Kong and he will make it like new for around 200-250$. He has done a couple of vintage Rolex bracelets for me and does outstanding work. Well worth the expense. Google him and you can find him easy.

The band looks okay just adjust the end links as already stated. Looks like a nice watch to wear daily, it would look great on a black leather or nylon NATO.

The local Rolex dealer was Beards Jewelers in Lufkin, TX

Had a smile like a shark thinking of his next meal. LOL! I know that was his first offer( I did just drive up in my truck and cowboy hat on) and I deliberately chose not to accept or negotiate.

I'm sure if I actually was willing to barter, his offer would have gone way up.

When I got the watch the last link was stretched open which allowed the buckle to separate and fall off the wrist. The Rolex guy said there is no way they will replace that stretched piece and I had to buy a new wrist band. I decided to make a better thicker clasp link in my shop(cause I'm a skilled stainless steel fabricator with a number of patented products) and this kind of stuff is right up my alley. So I took some 316 Stainless and cut, ground, filed, polished, and finally finished it in a brushed finish. Then bent and formed to surround and reinforce the original link. Pretty neat idea I might add, saved me $1400 today.

The watch was a gift to me from my fiancé

Looks to me like about half of those center links are worn out and about ready to split they are so thin.

This is what a healthy center link looks like..

Agreed, even a crummy pawn shop would have offered 2-3x that.

This reminds me of a Big Block I had for sale some time ago. It was mint, had just been serviced, and I was asking high 3k's for it. One guy called and must have asked me 10-15 questions about the watch, to which every question had a favorable (in my favor) and honest answer. He told me he was very interested in the watch, and could pay me $1200 for it. I wished him luck in his search and didn't even consider countering.

There are reasonable offers (perhaps 75-90% of asking price depending on condition, price point, etc.) and then there are the offers that make you wonder why people would even waste their breath to ask.

Ha! at least he knew what it was...

I was in my local AD and mentioned my 5512...he said "what's that?" I get it that they are retailers and are only interested in selling new product. But would it hurt to have personnel on staff with at least a basic knowledge of vintage.

I also mentioned a red sub I am in the process of acquiring and both of them were clueless. The woman said "they don't make a red submariner, it must be old, time to trade it in." I just said "yeah." and left it at that. No need to throw anything in their face. They are nice people and if they don't know, they don't know.

They obviously were oblivious as to what I was speaking of. And that is not a problem. But in your case, they blatantly were trying to rip you off.

Same thing happened to me with a very popular online seller. I submitted my 5512 information to get an online quote, through their webpage, just for kicks. They came back with 4k offer for a original dial, hands, lightly polished case with original bracelet 5512. Then even called me trying to get me to take their offer.

The other member was right...scumbags. I will never deal with them...ever. They sell a comparable 5512 on their site for over 10k.

Many are out to screw the next guy, scrounging for every dollar, quite sickening really. But, what are you going to do? Just roll with the punches and avoid them. There are good people out there, just gotta find them. Luckily we have this forum to fall back on packed with knowledge and information so we can all buy, sell and trade, making educated decisions.
