When someone gives advice that is incorrect at best and can lead to fraudulent and criminal consequences, that requires a comment. VAT fraud is pretty darn serious.

VAT has to be paid on items coming from outside the EU over £20, plus fees it comes to over 25%. Full stop. If trusted dealers are now saying they will pay the VAT invoice once you get it then that is fine, but that was not the case when I talked to them before.

Called one of them, he laughed and said heck no they won't pay VAT.
Seemed quite perplexed someone would even think they pay out almost 20-30% "cash back" for your VAT fees.

Sorry, I missed this question, and since then the thread seems to have taken something of a downward turn.

To answer the question, no I haven't bought the watch yet. Not because I don't know where to buy it, but because I can't bring myself to spend the money!

No, but when someone gives their incorrect ideas as advice that can lead to serious consequences to people who blindly follow that, I believe it is in the interest of this community to debunk those myths.

We are both newbies in this forum, but people with much longer presence in this forum have also taken note and commented on this advice given.

I have quite a bit of experience on watch-related extra- and intra-community trade in the EU, I know the risk is high on your watch being taken through customs, especially when the value is correctly stated in the customs paperwork that needs to be attached to the shipment.

DavidSW apparently uses FedEx for international shipping. FedEx will deal with the customs paperwork, doesn't matter if you want it or not.

And for the idea of them paying the VAT on your behalf (which is impossible), or sending you money for it, let's play the numbers game for a moment;

Round numbers are easy, let's say the watch costs $10000, shipped internationally including insurance. That is the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) price, and customs duty and VAT is applied to that.

Someone mentioned 29% as a rough estimate for the total in the UK, this varies by country. Finland for example does not apply duty, but a 24% VAT, but anyway, you can pick your %.

This means, that for a watch that is on sale, for a TRF trusted seller discounted price, for $10000, the seller has enough profit in it to sell it for $7100.
Now, why on earth don't you get that discount, when buying it domestically within the US? The dealers don't get any duty refund when exporting a watch from the US (and even if they did, the duty when importing a watch to the US is around 3%).

So, you are saying - a TRF trusted seller can sell a $10000 watch for $7100, and still make enough profit for the business.

A simple duck test like that is enough to understand this is simply not possible. And even though I did look, I did not find a single case, where someone had this VAT paid for by the sellers.
