Ok BMW Owners...Need Advice:

So thinking about adding a BMW to stable. It's been a brand that I shy away from because of a bad experience I had with one. Also, several friends have nothing but issues with them and others love them.

This car is not replacing anything, just adding to. As for pricing, I'm getting triple net (invoice - all holdback), so we are good there.

Down to two models-both completely different. (2016) 750 or (2016) i8. 750 is full of super cool tech which is why I like it. The i8 is, well cool looking, drives nice and those doors--I mean come on. Both are depreciation bombs, so getting triple net will help. And no I don't want M as I have other toys that fill that gap

So give it to me--which one and why or stay the hell away from BMW?

I know that BMW is a great car.

My old man has an X5 Diesel and a 335ci.

My buddy just bought is wife a 428 and they are both blown away.

But I just can't get on board. Unless I am going with some kind of M version of a BMW, I would have to pass.

There are so many great car brands out there today, and so many great cars to choose from.

If I were you, I would run. Not that you are crazy, there are a lot of reasons to like BMW, but option 3 would have to be my vote.

Actually believe it or not in the US the i8 doesn't come with the Display Key (yet). The 750 does. Weird I know.

I have always been a HUGE fan of BMW. I have owned four of them and all have been "entry level" 1988 BMW 325is , 2008 X3 3.0i, 2009 335xi and 2015 335i X-Drive here are my thoughts:

BMW is a driver's car - I think the minute designers put the pen on the pad and begin to draw they keep this in mind. It is hard to find that kind of sportiness elsewhere unless you pay up

BMW is the least reliable car brand I have ever owned - With the exception of my 1988 every single BMW I have had has given me issues most notably with ignition coils, VANOS system and fuel systems - No exceptions

Out of warranty repairs - The cost of an out of warranty repair could sometimes be as expensive as a used Rolex. I'd rather have the Rolex - High Pressure fuel pump at 51K

Based on your choices I can only assume you have the financial means to dump the car after a short period and never be out of warranty.

In short; I would get it only if you plan on keeping it only during the bumper to bumper warranty period and I would get the 750i. The i8 is incredible but during my last visit to BMW (Service) I got to sit in a 750i and WOW... What an amazing car.

Good feedback. I will keep less probably less than 12 months (flip in and out of cars) so warranty no issues, but I also don't like running cars to the shop even if under warranty

I think the problem is that your dealership won't have good enough loaner to give you!!

I love BMW but actually not a fan of the 750 or the i8. I think the new S class Merc is better choice. But you if are definitely going with one of those 2 I would choose the 750.

My in laws had a 740 that was a living nightmare.

Yeah the older (2014 and before) 740's I heard were not so great.

I would go for the new 750 over the I8 only because you already have the f car and I can't imagine the I 8 competing for entertainment.

Is there a lux cruiser in the stable currently?

Nothing can compete with 458

My thought on i8 is completely different car that I could take on longer trips, plus it's unique (458 is just weekend here to there car).

Don't have a lux cruiser, but still debating if I need one (no kids, etc). But the tech in it is so cool.

Good point. If taking long trips I would much rather be in the comfortable confines of the 7. But if it's just you and a suitcase...no pets or friends etc I'd be tempted to get the i8 as well for shits and giggles.

I'm in the minority... my 328xi has 100k miles, only routine service, tires, brakes, oil.
I think the i8 is cool and will turn heads but too many unknowns, the 750 is more proven and I think you will lose less in the year you keep it vs. the i8

I have only really seen maintenance issues on the high end ones (m's and largest engines).

They are pushing everything they can out of them. If you are only keeping for 12 months, I don't see you having many/any issues with a "standard" 750. Even if you do, you'll get an equivalent loaner. You are only out a trip to the dealer and get a "beater" to drive.

Btw, my 530i naturally aspirated has been extremely reliable.

Edit: what is this car for? Daily commuter, etc...

I have owned two 750's and never had an issue with them. Good drivers and are a good daily vehicle. The i8 is a cool car but like so many other vehicles that are similar I know better. Of the two listed, the 750 hands down. I would look at the new S 63 Coupe. Might give you the best of both worlds.

My preference would be the 750, personally I would shy away from the all electric car. I have seen the i8 in the dealership, and sat on it, I am not sure if I really like that car. There is no space for anything other than 2 people. Now, since you are planning in keeping for 12 months only, it could be fun to drive in the city and around Lake Travis, and it may be a real head turner.

I bought my first BMW, an X3 35i in 2013, and so far I am pretty happy and had not any issues with it, bought my son a 328 in 2014 (2012 cpo) with 100k warranty and we are also pretty happy.

8i for sure. Great looking car and has a little more flash than the 750 which i feel is diminished a little as uber is now using them as well. I personally wouldnt want to be confused for as an uber driver.

I've been thrilled with my 2014 328i GT M sport, best car I've ever owned, but the i8 is just super cool. The only car I'd consider over it in that range is a fully stacked Tesla.

It's actually mostly gas not electric.

I am on my 7th. BMW ... my wife on her 3rd. Obviously, I am a fanboy ... but I never had any issues, love the brand to death, love the way they drive and the tech, got a great service guy, great warranty ... I don't have a single negative thing to say (other than depreciation sucks). I know guys that had all sorts of issues, but knock on wood, it hasn't been the case with me ... and service has always been great.

Out of your options and considering your other toys, I'd go with the 750 ... It's a spaceship! The 6 grand coupe is nice as well!

I've also had a bunch of BMWs including a few Ms (one of which I sold at over 150K miles and rock solid reliable). It really depends on your usage, for around town, I'd say the 750 would work best if you have the other toy anyway. i8 I have some experience with and also very cool, but a bit more of a toy I'd say. They did a great job on the doors vs. some other exotics, and looks cool while still allowing people to come up and say hello more freely.
