This reminds me of when Oprah W went into some fancy purse store somewhere in Europe a few years ago and asked to view a bag on the top shelf, the sales lady told her point blank, oh those are too expensive, let me show you these down here.. ...

I am paraphrasing of course but it is a true story..

Moral, is to treat everyone the same no matter what

Disclaimer: I could never work retail.

Imagine the grief that a salesperson would get from management if they let someone who looked like a thug or hillbilly try on a $25K watch, who then ran out of the store with it.

I am sure that they are insured, but would give no end of grief to the salesperson.

I also imagine that they would give grief to a salesperson who let a scruffily-attired buyer walk out that could have bought a $25K watch.

Can't win.

My wife bought mine attired in scruffy clothes between trips to home center stores when we were buying our Hawaii house. I'm sure she didn't appear to have the means, but the AmEx Platinum card accepted the charges okay.

Ever AD I've been in has an armed cop on site. That tends to reduce the smash and grabs, though not eliminate them. A big AD in L.A. was robbed last year. I bet they didn't have armed security...

If you're wearing a Rolex they have to assume you know and expect good service as you've been there and done that. And a quick glance through here it will be abundantly clear many people have more than one. So an AD sales guy know this and should roll out the red carpet as you might be looking for #2 or #10.

If a sales guy refuses to show you a Rolex, whether you're wearing one or not, go find a different AD.

My brother and I are bearded, hoodie wearing goons. Our favorite activity used to be to drop into our local AZ AD and try on watches. The first few times they hesitated, looked at each other, then smiled uneasily when we pulled up our sleeves and removed our watches (normally a Submariner for me, Milgauss for my brother)...

Usually wearing one sample of a decent brand an AD carries will get you noticed and result in better overall service levels.

Not always but often IMO.
