Should I still buy my Grail Watch - DD40?

I have been reading the threads for the last month or so to educate myself about these beautiful watches and finally, this is my first post. When I see something I like and after doing my extensive research on the item, I usually go ahead and purchase the item, whether it be a watch, household item, home theatre equipment, etc. Sometimes I'm too quick on pulling the trigger and have buyer's remorse. Well, not when I purchased 4 Rolex's in the past 5 weeks! My 10th wedding anniversary is coming up and due to the upcoming price increase in Canada, my wife and I purchased Rolex watches for one another. I bought her a Lady DateJust 26mm with diamond markers and MOP dial. She bought me a DateJust 36 with Tuxedo dial.

I thought this was the end of the Rolex purchases but then I got an itch to purchase a daily wearer. I settled on the SubC Date. I called my local AD's and only one was available. I quickly went and purchased it. It's a beautiful watch that is classy and durable for everyday wear. Ok, life is now good. I have a DateJust36 and SubC.

I now begin reading on the threads about the Daytona's. The more I read the more I want this watch. I never owned a chronograph of any brand. I wanted the ss Daytona with white face and I know these are extremely hard to find, especially in Canada and because of the upcoming price hike. I call the AD's and they all stated that they have none in stock. I was told that the next shipment of watches to arrive will most likely have the new higher prices, anywhere from 8-13% higher. Darn, missed the boat on this one. However!!! I just so happened to call one of the AD's and he told me that they just received a shipment of new Rolex watches yesterday and he was actually holding in his hands a brand new in coffin ss Daytona with white dial. Exactly what I wanted. He asked me if I still wanted it and of course, I said yes and went down to purchase this beautiful watch.

In a period of 5 weeks, I now own 3 Rolex watches (DateJust 36, SubC Date and ss Daytona) and my wife has her Lady DateJust 26. I am happy with my trifecta and the only other watch, my grail watch, would be the DD40. Am I crazy for wanting the DD40??? Should I be content with what I have and enjoy these watches before buying anymore? I ask because there will be a price increase in Canada for sure, possibly anywhere from 8-13% and that is a big price increase for a DD40. I saw some DD40's at the AD's and I'm interested in the following:

1) YG with Stick markers on champagne dial
2) YG with Roman Numerals on champagne dial
3) WG with Roman Numerals on blue dial
4) WG with Diamond markers on black dial

All four of the above watches are within $5000 of one another, the YG being the least expensive and the WG with Diamond markers being the most. Not really interested in the Everose gold. I most like the WG with Roman Numerals on blue dial. It's a thing of beauty!! But I was told by a sale representative that the WG bracelet has a rhodium coating that when gets scratched and scuffed, is much more difficult to polish than YG or EG bracelets. It said that the WG bracelets if not maintained and polished, will end up looking like a stainless steel bracelet. Is this true?? I hope not because I really like the WG bracelet.

Since in the whole scheme of things, I'm a newbie in purchasing Rolex watches and therefore, I would greatly appreciated everyone's input in regards to whether I should be content with the 3 watches I already have or should I go ahead and get my grail watch. If getting the grail watch, which of the above do you recommend? Also, is the WG bracelet more difficult to polish and ends up looking like a stainless steel watch if not properly maintained?

Only you can assess whether you should get another watch.

I would personally slow down and consider the options a little more carefully before making a final decision.

The statements about the WG v. YG bracelet are incorrect. You do not polish these bracelets, you let a skilled professional do it at the appropriate service interval. If you polish it yourself you are likely to do it badly and make what was a simple problem much worse.

The DD40 is an amazing watch, but just be careful to select the one that you will enjoy the most for an enduring period.

YG sounds like it would be a great material as a change up on your SS models.

Additionally, good to sit back and follow the forum for a few months and see how your tastes change. Or don't change.

I would suggest to slow it down. As it has a lot of other options, such as WG submariner, BLRO and Platona etc. Even for DD, you may also consider the DD36. Each of them has their uniqueness. The more you look at them, the more you like it. Also the Basel 2016 is coming, you may have more options. Of course, if you can afford for few more, why not?

Are you thinking of the DD40 with the ice blue dial in WG? Or is it Pt?
Either way, how can you resist?

It is too soon to buy a Grail piece in my honest opinion. Ideally this should be a watch that you have lusted over for a significant period of time. I would slow down and enjoy your trilogy!!!

The ADs statements about Rolex WG are not true and the bracelet is not rhodium plated.
Everyone has their own personal preferences. If I bought 3 new watches in just a few weeks time and was considering a DD40, I'd flip 2 of the SS models.

My advice is to not buy because of a perceived price increase. A Day Date will always be appropriate in any collection. You might get thru the 'Honeymoon Phase' before spending any more money. Try to avoid an impulsive purchase.

Agree with all of Travis' points, esp the last, to test if you really want the DD40 and to stop you going bankrupt or getting divorced I would think if you can sell at least one of your SS first.

Ohhh dear.
Your story sounds familiar. You have 3 great watches. In fact, those are
the most iconic Rolex watches. DJ, Sub and Daytona.
Take it easy, wear these watches first, enjoy them and see if there is room for a 4th one.
Don't worry about the price. I was always offered a better discount for a gold
model at the AD.

It is easy to get a little caught up with buying on the forum, but I would slow down after 3 in 5 weeks. So much of the enjoyment comes from the researching of watches and weighing pros and cons of models vs. just buying. A few months and maybe the DD40 lust has moved onto another piece.

Catch a breath and enjoy and wear the watches you have purchased. Over a period of time certain features of the watches will make them more or less enjoyable. The Glidelock on the Sub, the case size for the Daytona, the wear on the DJ. PM models of all of the lines are great but are significant in cost even from the Trusted Sellers. So wear your watches, look and learn from the Forum and enjoy your journey.

The new DD40 on President is perhaps the ultimate most perfect Rolex ever made. Do consider YG, classic and timeless. But like others said, give it more thought, try it on several times and than buy grey. The price increase will than have less effect.

I'm assuming you can afford this binge buying. As long as that's the case, go ahead and get the DD40. However you won't wear the DJ36 after doing so. So trade it in to minimize the hit.

So the take-home messages from the above posts so far is:-

(1) please SLOW the hell down; there's no rush!

(2) a GRAIL is acquired after a period of lusting!

(3) you'll get a far better DISCOUNT for the DD40 if you negotiate, rather than buying in a rush, even with a price increase!

I've been collecting watches for 31 years; my grail is the DD40PT; I like the fact that I have to WAIT for this watch. Half the fun is the anticipation!

You aren't even taking the the time to appreciate what you have .. I would guess you are under 30, but could be wrong.

The period of affliction of attaining the Grail piece is often better then acquiring the item. Once you have it, the honeymoon wears off, and you are just left with a great watch.

You sound a lot like me, and I'm sure many others here. My advice from 40 years of this madness is:

1. Slow down.
2. Enjoy what you have.
3. Discover the trusted sellers. Their price reductions will outweigh a factory price increase.
4. Slow down.

What you don't realize (yet) is that the same personality type that moves so fast to collect, will undoubtedly, one day, begin to move just as fast to start flipping. Than the fun really starts, lol.

That's best handled by slowing down, being sure, than being really sure.

Are you going to be a flipper or keeper?

If you are sure you are not a flipper and will keep them forever, then get the DD now since it just came out and there will not be any significant changes. (except maybe new dial in the years to come). We all know the price will only go up.

Having said that, you are definitely on a binge. I also did some binge buying before the last price increase. I am ok with that because I know what I got is what I wanted and no point of waiting to buy it later and pay more for the same thing.

Agree with most mentioned above. Slow down and smell the flowers. You may find you want to get a different brand or even flip the ones you don't wear. Just take a breath. Don't fall into the trap of "price increase".

I'd exhale. Great collection you have put together. Now you are getting into price points where there are so many great watches and brands to explore. I'd take some time, look around, have some fun. If the DD40 is the one, go for it, or maybe a nice ALS, AP, VC, PP, there's a lot out there. I wouldn't rush my purchase based on an upcoming price increase. Get to know some of the trusted sellers around here. Have fun and welcome to the forum.
