Funny question about my Sub...

Picking up breakfast at McDonald's yesterday and the kid ringing up my order says "Wow that's a nice watch... is it an Invicta?". Thinking quickly I replied "Thanks but no it's a copy"

Funny, there have been a few on here who have received similar "compliments".

Nothing wrong with Invicta though, they are not for me, but I have a few coworkers who love them. Always excited to show off newest they have. They are usually rather large, but I remember back when I was very happy wearing a fossil, so who am I to judge.

Definitely see more "fashion watches" around my office than Swiss time pieces, that's for sure.

Why not simply say, "Thanks, but no - it's a Rolex Submariner."

The kid asked a sincere question - you should give a sincere reply.

Yep...had this happen from a Costco employee whom was handling a return from me and noticed my SDC 4k.

He had just been given an Invicta Sub for Christmas and was super excited about it!

I told him that was really cool, and yeah...I love mine too!

I see your point but my read on the situation (based on the question) was that, while giving a sincere compliment, he didn't really know a lot about watches.

While you're right in that it was a potential "teaching moment", with people in line behind me wasn't going to give a "coach up" session in McDonald's on a Sunday morning. More than anything it just struck me as funny that his "go to" nice watch was Invicta...

OK, so for those of you who have been Rolex owners for while (and who surely have experienced it), here's my question, then: how DO you react/answer if/when:
a. someone mistakenly acknowledges your Rollie for something not even in the same stratosphere, OR
b. someone correctly identifies your watch and says, "Hey, is that a Rolex?"

And answer without sounding like an arrogant ass...?

Juan

I worked at McDonald's for a number of years (Ages 14-19) If the customer was friendly enough and there was time for small talk I'd compliment them on their watch. Once in a while you would get a really cool piece with a really cool story behind it.

There isn't anything funny about anyone working at McDonald's wearing an Invicta. It is a stepping stone and who knows what that kid will be able to afford down the road.

I wonder if the guys on here wearing Platonas and Platinum DD think it is funny our go to watches are Stainless Steel Submariners.... Just a thought.

A. It doesn't matter to me and if there is honest interest in knowing about my watch I will tell them what it is. Otherwise I will say thank you and move on.

B. Depends how and where the "identification" takes place. Could be perceived as sketchy or friendly. It all depends but for the most part a simple, "hey, yes it is" is enough.

A) I had my Omega Planet Ocean mistaken for a Rolex and on another occasion for a Fossil.

B) I haven't had my 1680 long enough. Generally (historically) whatever I am wearing goes unnoticed.

I wouldn't knock the "kid" too hard.

at least he's working, who knows it may be his dream one day to own a nice watch.

a little encouragement prob wouldn't hurt.

Great to see that McDonald's was your first stepping stone , a LOT of very successful stories started at McDonald's.
To answer your other question.....I have a platona and some other SS pieces, including 2 Subs. I wear them all, and consider them all "go to watches" and admire them all equally!
It's nice to hear about a potentially Good kid working and having an interest in watches in general. I'm glad when the kids a quick service restaurants or other places, are generally nice, and don't have an attitude.
Nice to see someone else with a great point of view

After reading all the comments on this thread, I have a plan to make it work for everybody...

Smile and tell the kid "it's just a Rolex Submariner" and go about your day.

Then, if he is still working around Christmas time, present him with something from your "early collection"....maybe a a Seiko 5 on a nice leather strap....

What goes around, comes around.....

When i get a Plantona will never look at you SS peasants the same. Lol. Just kidding. I think once you are discussing watches as detailed as we do no matter how expensive or cheap your watches. There is a respect factor. Obviously the employee in the same category of watch knowledge.

OK & here's question #2...how would you react/respond if someone asked you if your Rolex was a fake?

this actually happened several years at a seemingly upscale bar. a woman noticed that the bartender (a buddy of mine) was wearing a two-tone DJ. little did she know or realize that it was a $50.00 quartz replica from overseas. when he suggested that she check out mine (a more obscure model yet authentic), she asked me if mine was a fake!

in this instance, I had no response other than to glance back at the bartender & order another drink.

I personally think kids working at McDonalds or any other entry level job is a good thing. It builds some character, gives them a sense of responsibility and the value of a dollar (no pun intended). I didn't work at McDonalds as a kid but did work in a deli when I went to High School. Learned some basic work/life lessons. Better earlier in life then later, better to have, than act like a deuche in life thinking their above something or someone.

Their mcgriddle is no joke. Not healthy but certainly delishious. I used to love invicta watches until I became a full blown Rolex addict. I would have told the kid it's a Rolex and tell him that invicta was a nice brand to start collecting watches.

I was in Goa a few years ago and the shack boys saw my MM300 and asked if it was expensive. I said around €100 bought in Japan which they were all happy with.
I see no reason to attract attention or make myself a target.
I walked and drank in some dodgy places around the world at all times of night and day wearing my Submariner since 1986 and never had anyone ask. If I ever felt a little self concious I wore it watch inward strap out.
