Hello all I'm after your opinions please. I have 9k gbp to spend on a rolex now I'm looking to get a second hand watch and preferably a Rolex witch has good investment opportunities. The watches I'm looking at are.

DSSD deep blue really like this watch but is it a good investment opportunity

Daytona

Early Sub

These are examples. I'm not an Rolex expert these are just styles I like I am open to suggestions of other Rolex watches.

I have a breitling collection. Just starting my Rolex collection

Any advice appreciated

No Rolex is a good investment opportunity. Buy because you like the model, not because it'll gain in value. What is hot today could be ice cold in 5 years.

no. not an investment. however if you buy to wear and eventually resell its a safe bet but NOT an investment

D-blues are becoming more readily available lately......

I'd focus on buying the very best "condition" of whatever model you like best.

I would go with the modern Sub-C. The ND or the Hulk would be my choice and if purchased right you will not lose much, if any, money on a sell or trade. They are modern classics which can be worn daily. The Glidelock clasp is worth the price of admission alone.

If your goal is to be able to get in and out without losing money.

I would go pre "C" models. Pepsi or Coke GMT. Sub or Sub Date.

If TT is to your liking. GMT Root Beer or true Bluesy Sub.

Agree that only a rare few will ever appreciate enough to qualify as an investment. Which will hold it's value best is the question. IMO, it's the Daytona. Check out chrono24 prices (or Bob's Watches). For that matter check out the prices on Daytona's for sale in this forum.

Edit: I did a SMALL sampling of 2005 Daytona's and 2005 Submariner's (w/ date). In 2005, the Daytona 116520 SS sold for just under $7k. The majority of them are selling for close to $11K on Chrono24 (~ 57% increase in value). The SS Sub (w/ date) sold for $4225 in 2005. They run between $5900 and $6500 on Chrono24. Assuming an avg of $6k, that's a 42% increase. So, the Sub and Daytona both seem to do quite well.

Most used Rolexes bought smartly will hold their value, which is the most you should hope for, so go with what looks and feels best on you.

Hmm... using $11k for PV and $8.5k for inflation adjusted value I get an ROI of 29% for the Daytona. Either way, as you said, not bad for something you wear on your wrist everyday!

OP, I tend to take a different view than most here. I do treat every Rolex purchased as an investment, and I consider buying what I believe will appreciate. It's just as easy to find one you like that will appreciate (for example, 1675) rather than one you like that has Little chance of appreciation (14000). Rolexes are definitely hi risk part of my portfolio, but it is still part of the portfolio.

Thanks everyone for all your comments, I don't think I explained my self properly when I say investment I'm talking long term not to buy and sell in a year but more like 10.

Now I know you can't guarantee a watch will increase in value but surely there are some Rolex's that demand a premium and will be a good investment.

I only buy watches I like. I do wear my watches but being an engineer I don't wear them at work.

I really do like the hulk. And I understand what people say about the DSSD D-blue

The D-Blue is an awesome watch but not necessarily practical as an everyday piece; depends on your lifestyle. I love mine but not sure I could have it as a one and only.

Contrary to the blanket statement posted above, they are not more readily available lately. Certainly not in the UK or here in Singapore anyway. If you can find one, you're unlikely to lose any money on it if you pay retail (as opposed to going to Watchfinder and paying a grand over retail for a NIB).

So that equals about a 2% average annual inflation adjusted return. Not bad for a watch. Not great for an investment.

If memory does not fail me I paid 6600 or close to that new from a Rolex AD in NY. The clerck said: "I do not know who you know, but we sell these watches used for 10k all day long"

Don't buy it thinking it will appreciate. And yes, in North America not that hard to find, and I imagine that will be the case everywhere at some point.
