Owning 2 Rolexes and one AP 15400, the Rolexes are excellent watches, but the AP is at a higher level of finishing, especially the amazing bracelet.

While prices are certainly higher, AP does tend to offer a much more substantial discount than Rolex.

I don't know about that. 20% is pretty much the on the top end of the scale of discounts for most AP models. Other than some of their SS models, Rolex seems to have about the same level of discount. Have you seen otherwise?

That photo looks like the window display from the GF AD in London They also are one of the largest AP ADs in the UK IIRC The owner gets his hand on some some really special AP and GF pieces!

In this regard, Rolex probably competes more head to head with Omega with their sports watches.
AP has quite a few models in their current lineup that directly compete in the dress watch category with Vacheron, Patek and ALS. Models like the Jules Audemars and Millenary, certainly AP is best know for their sports lineup In the Royal oak, but AP goes head to head with the best of them in the dress category, particularly in the field of high complications.

OP. Did you see the difference of finishing between Rolex and AP? I had both, for me Rolex is a good middle end watch brand, AP is a high end brand, you can't compare them, just look at a Rolex movement and an AP movement, 2 different worlds...

Well yeah, you are pretty much screwed if just after getting the ROO you're thinking Patek

I'll go along with most of this, but I do not think of Rolex as a BMW. A Rolex is a tank!

Horses for courses.

I was into Rolex for decades. Then I bought two APs (and almost bought a Patek). Had them for a year before coming home to Rolex and going PM. Couldn't be happier.

I was looking at some of their JAs and some of their simple dress pieces were very nice. I'll put some pics up.

The question is why Rolex is so expensive. Back when the Royal Oak was released I believe it was like thirteen times more expensive than the Submariner, look at the price difference now.

When was that? The early 70's?

As a movement making yes, their watches do not have the same level of finishing though, unless you look at their very high end. But the price reflects this too.

I have said this in a previous post but used Mercedes instead of BMW and some people thought that was accurate!

I always wonder why people say that go from Rolex to AP then to Patek and finally RM. At first I thought about going down this path but AP really has two levels of watches. Their entry level RO and ROOs and then their perpetual calendars, tourbillons, concepts, grand comps, etc. I've tried to get a Patek but I like sport watches so Patek does nothing for me and while I love RM I would rather have a schumi lap timer or ROO tourbillon chrono over an RM. Both movements are made by APRP and AP has a way stronger history and will be in business and independent much longer.

This is a very subjective argument. Rolex are super reliable and built like tanks personally when spending 25k on a precious metal Rolex I think some would want the attention

Why does it seem that Audmars Piguet are more expensive than Rolex?

Absolutely is! And VC's are growing on me too!

I agree it is a beautiful dressy sports watch but it is not a step up from the RO. The comment was more on people saying they "move up" from AP to Patrk. If considering the entire RO vs nautilus lines the RO of MUCH more complex. AP is killing it with the addition of the perpetual calendar, skeleton, tourbillions, grande comps, etc. Patek has the 5990 chrono/travel time, an annual calendar....

AP also has the ROO line that is more sporty than anything Patek has. They compare much better to RM with their higher end complications and both movements are made by APRP anyway.

I really hope Patek does somethings outside the box for the 40th anniversary of the nautilus. A 42mm version, a skeleton, perpetual calendar, etc. I love Patek as a brand but I want a sports watch from them that I'll love wearing. At this point I would rather save for a complicated AP.

I also prefer Patek over AP in the dress watch market but I have no need for a dress watch.
