Pillows
Ok so I'm having trouble sleeping, was wondering what pillows everyone is using.
Got a new mattress being delivered tomorrow, I know that new bedding won't completely resolve my insomnia. So now after some decent pillows. What do you you use, feather/down? Duck/goose, are you fussy about your poultry? Or a synthetic/memory foam. Do you use 1 or 2 pillows, expensive or cheap? Suggestions please. Thanks. |

2 memory foam. I have horrible sleeping habits.
Things I have done to help me sleep better in the bigger scheme of things: No alcohol (if you start using alcohol to sleep it makes it that much harder to sleep when you don't drink it) Same for medication. Bedroom is used for two things: knocking boots, and sleeping. THAT IS IT. Don't want tv, phone etc. Put phone on do not disturb and put it off to the side. (I have work contacts who can call me out on a list that it will still ring) Hot shower before bed. If I read I do it in another room. When I am tired I go to the bedroom. Try to sleep at the same time as normal. About impassible for me due to work schedule. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I second memory foam, I also use a memory foam 4" mattress pad. I had terrible insomnia and did hypnosis, it really helped.

I'm kind of a mental case about pillows, I can't use two, never could. I need one very firm pillow and if I use a store bought foam/synthetic filled it only last a month as I have a giant head (Irish) and turn the pillow on its side. So I've tried the $200 memory foam, the "My Pillow"s and the scam pillows the mattress shops sell and they all stink. I just go to a Dept store, get there extra firm cheapy-pillow and replace it every 6 weeks or so.

Thanks guys, seems like the memory foam is quite popular, I more like the idea of a feather pillow, but don't think it will offer enough support.
Yes this is why I drink every night. I don't have a problem getting to sleep just waking up too much and awake too early. |

Not sure if you are willing to try, but melatonin really helps me.
Good luck. I've dealt with insomnia for years and I would not wish it on anyone.

Reading before bed and melatonin have helped me a lot. Going to sleep a bit later too.

I've tried a bunch of expensive pillows but at the end of the day I found cheap and firm works best for me as I'm a side sleeper.
I'll second the above advice regarding sleep only in the bedroom. I've been breaking this habit lately with my Netflix on my iPhone (no tv in bedroom) but this post has reminded me I should axe that. Other than that reading and a hot shower before bed works quite well. |

I have problems too, not necessarily falling asleep but will pop up wide awake at two or three in the morning, and can't go back to sleep for an hour or two, sometimes longer. Aggravating but I have found out getting upset doesn't help, so I go in to the living room, read, listen to music, try just to relax. As for pillows, the different ones I tried didn't seem to change the situation at all. Unless you can not sleep because of a physical-comfort thing, I think it's all mental. Good luck Wes, I suffer with it too and it sucks!

I use this from brookstone. http://www.brookstone.com/biosense-2...w/913988p.html
I have tried so many other pillows (ranging from $20-200) but this is my favorite. I lost it once (still have no idea how I lost a pillow or where it went) and had to get a new one. |

I have the same problem and am seeing a sleep doctor. Am on some medication that helps me get back to sleep, as well as meditation technique of not telling yourself you NEED to get back to sleep but rather just letting your mind drift.

I use "My Pillow". I got it after I was waking up with a sore neck. It took care of that problem. I read somewhere that if you wake up in the middle of the night, you should not look at the clock. Doing the math to figure out how much time you have left until you need to get out of bed wakes you up even more. Good luck!

It's not a replacement for a pillow, but I swear by the Dohm sound machine, around since the 1960's. I can't believe how much better we sleep with one of these. Worth a try for $50.

Pillow-wise I have a Calvin Klein thing that is fine. I see the my pillow adverts on TV and they guy creeps me out - he's so happy he has managed to enslave a whole town into making pillows. |

Give it a shot and sleep on it for a few nights, I'm pretty sure they have a full refund policy. I do not have any relation to the mypillow. Thought I'd throw that out there |

Same here. Insomnia. Fall asleep rather easily some nights but wake up early 2-3 AM pretty frequently. Tried all kinds of solutions. Don't like meds, even OTC as I go to the gym at 5am and the meds make me groggy in the morning.
New memory foam mattress delivered last week and so far that has helped some. For pillows, I prefer foam rubber...not memory foam but the old school firm foam rubber pillows. You can find them at department stores like Macy's or similar. They are a touch $$, but I really don't like anything else. I love traveling, but generally dislike the mattresses, bedding and pillows even in nice hotels. Makes the insomnia worse. I found that working out helps the most.

Completely agree! As a matter of fact, I hooked up a sound machine to a set of speakers in the ceiling over my bed and at night listen to white noise, or rain, or whatever; I don't think I could sleep without it! |

I find the pillow doesn't make much difference to how I sleep but does impact on whether I wake with a sore neck. Different people need different amounts of support for neck/head which determines whether you need a thin/fat/hard/soft pillow. Takes a bit of doing to find the right one.
As you get older your sleep patterns change. Saw an interesting doco on this the other night. It appears to be about a chemical in your brain that is supposed to trigger sleep at the right time but gets out of sync as you age. I take a mild sleeping tablet every few days to ensure I get the occasional good nights rest.

I would recommend waiting until you try a few nights on the new mattress with your old pillow. I have found that I need differing levels of pillow support depending on how firm or soft the mattress is. Try your old pillow on the new mattress and then that will at least give you a starting point as to whether you need firmer or softer, taller etc.
Also try a few different ones to get a better feel for what you need and don't be afraid to try them in the store. I have bought new pillows without doing this and found that a pillow that was perfect for my old mattress was too firm to suit my new one. Also, every pillow and mattress takes a few nights sleep to properly get used to it and get really comfortable so no need to rush into any decisions.
